I have a problem with my Jeep for the last week or so, it won't start. I can shove some starting fluid down it and it will fire, but not run. And when it fires, the check engine light goes off but when it doesn't run, it stays off. Now my question is: isn't that light supposed to come on if the engine dies? I an thinking it should, but can't remember for sure. Just wanting to find out so I can go in the right direction with this. It is not showing any codes.

If the ignition is in the run position but the engine isn't running the Check Engine light should stay on.

That is what I thought, but I wasn't sure since I have not had these kinds of problems with this vehicle before. Thanks

most of the GM rides wont throw a code when the fuel pump takes a dump. If it was something like a sensor a code would show up.:D

Well, I got it started today. It started right up. My second battery was not engaged. But, it shouldn't need two optimas to start. I checked voltage and my ECM is only getting about 10V instead of 12. I am going to have to figure that one out. Probably a bad ground. Now on to the next project, replace bad idler pulley and customize the track bar bushing.

As for the idler pulley. Have you ever tried to relube them? One of the tricks I use on noisy ones is grease them with a grease needle adapter on my grease gun. Remove the pulley and if the bearing is still tight take the needle and slip it under the lip of the bearing seal. A pump or two and its good for a hundred thou or so. I use synthic grease if that matters.

I was blessed with a freebie, so I put it in and got rid of a lot of noise. The original was pretty loose in the bearing.
