good thing bad thing...the Texans are coming....

http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/industries/5716712/Big-quake-fails-to-stop-Texan-oil-giant

It is believed that we experience so many earth quakes here (central Oklahoma) because of oil drilling. But for ya'll already having such an unstable environment I can't imagine how much more (quantity and size) quakes you will get.

Always wondered how the insurance situation worked in a continued quake scenario. Do the companies continue to pay for repairs or do they tell you to wait until all shaking activity ceases??

anything over a 5 is classed as a new insurance event....

http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/christchurch-earthquake/5760549/Sundays-shock-a-new-insurance-event

so even the new work that was damaged last night, i have to put a new claim in.......so could be up to a year waiting again blue.....:bang:

if the powers to be had listen to me ,they would of saved up to at least 10k of repairs thats gotta be done again.......:mad0090:

I think you must have better insurance there than here. Our insurance would have a cap and not allowed future claims. Or we would have to sue for further money from them.

eqc,,,earthquake commission.....government sort it on your house up to $100000... then private insurance have too....any thing out side like concrete driveways is private insurance..house contents is eqc up to 100k......

We have gov't insurance for floods but no such quake insurance that I am aware of. The flood insurance says that 50,000 square feet surrounding your property must also be flooded to qualify you to file a claim, so virtually useless for most homes.

(They showed the old church, pristine... made me sad to see it as it was before the quakes started. Dang that was a beauty.) Checked the show's air date and sure enough it was from 2008.

There have been some in history as there is a fault line, but it wasn't until the last couple of years that they seem to be more active. Most people think it is due to the oil well drilling that has been going on here. However, today there have been more than normal and the two larger ones have been the 2nd and 3rd largest in the state history.

prerunner1982
11-05-2011, 11:27 PM
Just upgraded to a 5.6, largest in Oklahoma state history.

There was damage reported with the 4.7 this morning, however it is too soon right now after the 5.6 magnitude. I am sure there will be some in the morning once everyone has a chance to check it out in the light.

Hey... just had another 4.7 quake. I even called it, told the wife that was about a 4.5... sure enough. Wasn't as much shaking and didn't hear this one coming because of all the severe weather going on outside right now.

Tornadoes.....severe thunderstorms.....and earthquakes all in the same day. Only in Oklahoma.

What do you expect in a state where you run the heater in the morning and the A/C in the afternoon?!?:rotfl2:

I wondered if any of the quakes would mess up the roads, but I don't know how I'd tell if they'd been damaged!!:D

I felt the first one on Saturday morning at 2:27 in Durant, OK. Pretty far south. I was fishing during another one saturday, and the fish TURNED ON bigtime!! I caught a 6 pound bass then an 8 pounder.

The biggest 5.6 one happened while my wife and I were driving home from buying groceries. Didn't get to feel that one. We got home, and all of our pictures were either crooked or on the floor. The cabinets were open and some things had fallen out. Our horses were FREAKING OUT!!

Then, last night, I was sitting in my big truck doing some paperwork, and I felt the last one. This is getting weird. Never felt one before Friday.

I know. But if it is any consolation I think things will eventually settle in and tapper off. After the reading I have done on it, you guys have a number of faults there. When that happens, stress builds up over time, then needs to be released. It has been awhile since you folks had a lot of quakes there in ChCh. It happens here like that too, only ours are more violent, or we get a volcano popping its cork.

Wayne

You guys holding up OK?

Thanks for the link. It gave me a chance to do some reading. I notice a couple of volcanoes on the north island have had their scale of activity increased from 0 to 1. It seems you have a lot of them there. Also did some reading on tsunamis. Your not generating them I notice, which means the islands are not moving with these quakes. Kind of curious for me, but I only have a small amount of knowledge of geology. Hang in there man, and if you have any volcanoes that are ready to pop, better run. Ours can take out up to 1000 square miles when they pop. We can get caldera here. Beautiful, but some can cover large parts of North America with debris, such as what happened with Crater Lake in OR and Yellowstone lake in Wyoming. We have an active one within sight of here and live on the edge of the lava flow. Keeping my eye on that one.

cantab27
01-02-2012, 12:30 PM
volcanoes, no live ones down here...couple of live ones up north....whole place was created by them millions of years ago.....yeah these shakes are just out to sea in a smaller fault line ... fault line is small so they reckon no tsunami , tis mother nature she will be the judge of that,, fault will throw out about a 7 they say.....these ones feel different and its sad that we have got to the stage were we can tell were they are coming from by noise and ground movement....these ones are loud and like a twisting sensation.....latest report saying this could go on for 7 years or so....it has the men in white coats puzzled ,as quakes aren't following same pattens as other big quakes around the world...parked up last night to grab some take out..4.8 rolled through...tj rolling and moving , windows in the shops going stupid....everyone justs stops wait to see how big its gonna be and just carries on...just think 18 months ago that would of had people running...........tis strange times......only two during the night..

Too bad. But what is up with the test run. I don't understand what needs to be tested. You folks should be used to that by now.

If it wasn't so emotional, they should be burned. We used to do that when I was a firefighter. We would have a training fire and leave nothing but a foundation and some ashes. A scrapper would come get the pipe and iron and cleanup was done in a couple of hours.

Thanks for that Warren. Now that I look at it, the bay looks like a caldera with an old lava dome in the center (Quail Island). We have those here too, the most famous of them in Yellowstone park in Wyoming and Crater Lake in Oregon. When those pop, it is really something. There is always something underlying in the deep earth that causes them and sort of settles things in my mind.

After 20 mos of it you would think somebody might have at least a why? Underground volcano ? Plates moving of course but there must be a reason why all of a sudden you have that long of constant shakeing. The other thing I was pondering is it just local to your area or ddoes it encompass the entire area or New Zealand? I also wonder how many people have actually left New Zealand because of this ? Could it be a bunch of those big Maori dudes dancing and stomping real hard? they are big boys.

4.3LXJ
06-15-2012, 10:58 AM
Mark, I have been doing some reading on the links that Wayne has supplied and more in some connected to them. The whole place is criss crossed with faults, as well as some dormant volcanoes. The number of quakes recorded on both islands is unbelievable. There are more recorded on the north island than the south, but the ones in the ChCh area have been more severe.

cantab27
06-15-2012, 03:33 PM
• The final section of the Ring of Fire exists where the Indo-Australian plate subducts under the Pacific plate and has created volcanoes in the New Guinea and Micronesian areas. Near New Zealand, the Pacific Plate slides under the Indo-Australian plate.

My personal opinion based on what happens with these things on this side of the rim, once they relieve the stress, your quakes will slow down or stop. Pressure builds up and then the ash is let loose. Supposedly the ash is caused by grinding of the sea floor as it is drawn down under (pun intended)
