yep ya on to it warren, i think we are closer to the river now...gone up and to the left and getting worst.... as for the re-bar, mesh in concrete again warrens right but i think that law may change.... we wont put concrete on the ground unless it has steel in it .. we have turned down jobs because people are to tight to pay a bit extra....have had calls from customers happy concrete still intact,,have had others saying gone, but in those cases houses are gone to and re-bar bent and snapped,.....but new housing still going on doing a 300 plus square meter house tomorrow.....6am start ,concreteing in the dark for two hours , probably be my best work...............................l

are your houses made like in the US with a wood frame ? or more like I know in Europe with actual wall bricks or concrete blocks ?

cantab27
05-19-2011, 10:57 AM
we have both steph,, most made of wooden frame and bricks....bigger ones seem to be block.......doesnt matter in the end cause if mother nature wants it she just takes it....

looking a lot like what's going to be needed there is steel piers sunk to bedrock, then fat rebar tied to those. That would help but not stop fall downs from the shaking.
I worked on foundations for oil and gas holding tanks back in the eighties, gotta love the specs we were told to design for. ended up with foundations that were 15' thick and with more rebar in them than concrete. The pilings we drove were 60 feet long to get to the bed rock and they were 1" thick steel I beams with a 12" riser height. These were placed at 2' intervals. then 2" rebar was welded to all of them.

dang chip yall should be down here running the rebuild;)..nothing has really started,,you all know how governments work ,,,city councils ,,,do everything twice for no result...people are getting pissed:bang:..we have had the powers to be here three times shit that may be four times, anyways they still have to come back for another meeting and start date for house,,,cause we are on the $100,00 damage list i can now see the earth quake commision trying to pass it on to our insurers..100k and over has to go through your own insurers....went over to mate place other night and roads are still shit,30kmh most places,,pipes still keep bursting,,traffic in shit 20 min trips take about a hour plus,..no fishing not the fishing season yet:mad:....as for the jeep chip,,, do they ever run right......rant over ............:smiley-talk024:

dang, sounds like ya'll need to just fire everyone and start over. when we have a big disaster here, folks are keen to "Get R Done". the fiasco in NewOrleans raised awareness of the lack of ability of the federal government to do much of anything. Resulting in local folks steping in and pushing the feds out of the way.

cantab27
06-04-2011, 05:36 PM
couple of good rumbles yesterday biggest 4.1........this is the first major disaster NZ has had in over a 100 years me thinks...........one big learning curve for everyone...we are only a small country,, just on four million and Christchurch has just over 400,000 ....wont help with winter here....but hey we are kiwis,,,,she be right mate......l

looking more and more like CHCH needs lots of green painted everywhere. sad to hear about the rising cost of insurance. Here there are people being told their policies are cancled because of making a tornado damage claim. It seems that being caught in a natural disaster costs the victims more than anyone thought. Sorry state of businesses hollering and getting greedier if you ask me. (of course no one does lol)

well it seems like its gonna keep going as well......

Monday's quakes have increased the probability of another earthquake of similar size or stronger hitting Canterbury in the next year.

New calculations by GNS Science yesterday show that from today until June 15 next year there is now a 30 per cent chance of a quake of between magnitude 6.0 and 6.9 striking the Canterbury aftershock zone.

That compares with a nearly one-in-four, or 23 per cent, probability expressed last month.

Well mates, there is one good side to all this shaking, if you can call it that. None of the volcanos have gone off. There were the kinds of quakes your getting for about 8 months before Mt. St.Helens decided to blow. At least your not seeing that sort of thing. Keep hanging and carrying on and know we are praying for you and keeping you in our hearts. I'm looking forward to the green jeep lessons.

drove through town and east side a couple of times now...roads are worst,,that liquefaction shit wow,,its everywhere again,,,its being to dry so it dusting as well...took me a hour yesterday in the jeep what usually takes 20 mins to travel to a site safe course ,,,work is kinda on hold again...we have a broken city, BUT this time i think its breaking the people....oh its just after 4am,,had a shake about 45 mins ago, you cant sleep and if you do its broken sleep ,a week of sleep be nice....

here's the thing about moving...unless we walk away from our home we cant really move...we have a small mortgage, we have a damaged house 100k and counting..we cant sell house,,,we are screwed ,, just like most people in the city...moving,,,yep wish it was that easy....anyways y'all brought any green paint yet......

thanks for asking and all the well wishes guys, means a lot ,i know other kiwi boy warren reads them...sounds corny but posting about this shit kinda helps the metal side of what we are going through.........

That just seems scary, like really scary. I don't know how you guys are able to continue going about your day, I would be a mess. I don't think I could continue on with that happening all the time with no warnings I would lose it.

I am a little weird but all I can think of is little things, like trying to cook dinner, being on the toilet, pouring a glass of water and so on seems like it would get old real fast. like the first time the reaction would be "oh wow, I remember where I was and what I was doing and then it all shook and it was scary and then it was over and i called my mom or wife... "

the second and third times would just be like "really?" and after that it would be taking all the pictures out of frames, deciding what I could live without, and finding how to get the irreplacable stuff shipped with me to a new home, far far away where the ground was solid and I could still feel basically safe.

I am not sure what it registers but I have been present at a few blasting sites where explosives are used underground and felt the earth shaking. it is weird and powerful but you know exactly when it is happening. the few times that I was caught off guard scared the crap out of me, so my heart really goes out to you guys, the shaking I have felt doesn't even compare in magnitude, it just gives me a little insight, enough to know that I have to say how absolutely amazing it is that your able to just keep moving forward.

Scary shit right there mates, and to have that sort of shaking as daily events just has to get older and older. It seems to me that they need to be thinking of real help to the folks like you who are watching the house just fall apart instead of spending so much time in "committee" yacking about. I'm betting many are starting to :sign0181: and not surprised that many are moving out, happened here with katrina, lots of folks left and never went back. You all are in my prayers to stay strong mentally, cause this shit has to be wearing you down like cronic pain. Now if the government would finally stand up and give the people the means to move that would be responsible government.

I can empathise, it has to be a lot like the ancestors watching the never ending flood of european decent people in their wagons, taking lands that don't belong to them and rubbing out the people that were already. the human psyche can only stand so much of the type of shit y'all are going through before it says "enough is enough, I quit this game" The true telling of strength is how long you can remain with out backing down and still manage to keep your sanity. just for others reference it has been 278 days since the first shake. That's an average of 27 quakes per day, every day since the inital quake. May creator take mercy upon the Kiwi's and end this trial of the people.

my understanding is government will buy land plus house at 2007 market value..this is a good thing as in 2007 housing market was at peak..or just buy the land and persons have to sort out house with own insurer....they have 9 months to decide,,,this covers just over 5000 homes, with another 10000 plus still getting test done, plus they haven't even done the hills yet and there are thousands of homes up that ways....this is one reason why land is gone

Kauri wood, also got some remu. I got three nice chunks of each that I turned into handles on some of my fly rods.

your government guys need to figure a way to stabilize those marbles y'all live on top of, that might make the biggest difference. Here in arkansas usa, They (the government agencies) stopped the "injection" of gas drilliing waste (fracking fluid) because it was creating quakes. Maybe your's needs to find a way to drill down to the marble layer and fill it with a cement type mixture. Just a thought of a way to stop or slow down all those shakes.
