Glad to hear your family is ok. Is christchurch on a falt line or are your earthquakes caused from volcanic action. I live on a fault line that is part of san andreas fault line, it's the big one running through cali from the north to the south. Although we have not a big one since the 80's(7.1) I will never forget the day when I was at work that day and it souned like a frieght train coming down the street with the sound of windows breaking coming towards me. All the cylinders in my Dad's welding supply fell over and all the windows broke out. We were fortunate that we kept caps on all the cylinders and we had no projectiles. The rest of LA suffered much more damages ie: freeways and multi story buildings. It's not something that we think about much any more but the big one is always in the back of your mind. Here in socal it could be a very bad situation because we are more a desert and there is not much fresh water here it's all comes from nothern cali so if our aquaducts break it would be all about who has enough gas to drive to fresh water supply and how much food and water you have on hand. Christchurch NZ has been in our news every day. It looks every bit as beautiful as I had imagined but what tripped me out was a hawaiian looking dude with a english accent on the news talking about the quake because our islanders are real laid back and they have their own accent that is kinda cool . I forget that you are part of polynesain islands because it looks more alpine than tropical from what I have seen on the TV. But if you see socal on TV you would think that all of socal is homos and nut jobs on drugs. So I imagine our perspective of NZ is off too. Well I was very worried about you well being because out of all the people that post on this site your the most interesting to read. God bless you guys and you will and have been in our prayers. If you could get here easily you would be more than welcome to stay here. We might all be fruits and nuts but their is still alot of good people here, but it seems like more and more they are leaving to other states. So say a prayer for california too.

lol oh no. This isn't going to fly well with the "people" of Katrina. Wayne I understand not wanting to bring the mood of the chat room down, but it's chat people can chat later, or if you just can't bring yourself to do it move it over to the "Weather" chat. That way the people that are there interacting will be there by choice. I think it's important for you to talk about this stuff, and I think your friends like talking to you about it.

x2 Tony. It is very important to talk through things like this Wayne. You have friends here that are more than willing to listen, talk about all of it and worry about you, your family and friends there in the thick of it all. Your our mate, we can't do otherwise.

We had three quakes of much smaller magnitude last night a 4.7, 4.5 then a wee 3.6, all in the period of four hours. These were shallow movements but were felt as far away from the epicenter as 150 miles. Just for comparison, The Christchurch quake was 3 thousand times more violent than what we had last night, which moved items from their appointed places on the shelves.

The largest I've personally been through was an 8.4, (San Fran CA) very scary when everything around you starts falling down, including freeways, 70+ story buildings, not to mention the earth splitting open and swallowing everything on the crack.

It is hard to know what to say really, except we are there in spirit. Just keep looking ahead. When this is over, many of your landmarks will be rebuilt. The people of those churches will rally and rebuild with something that will withstand the quakes. We have one in the San Francisco area that is on rollers that will just roll around. It made it through the last big one with no problems. Just keep moving ahead. You will know people who have lost loved ones. But your grief and anger will pass. And keep sending up some of those prayers, for yourself and especially for others. That will help a lot.

Mate, notice that other places on the planet earth have experienced quake sequences similar to NZ and the moon cycles had nothing to do with them. This guy is pointing out natural occurances that have happened by probable coincidence rather than gravitational pulling forces. true, they have been happening at the same time when the moon changes to a full moon, but it is unlikely that this is the cause of the quakes. China for example, was not experiencing moon cycles like NZ and yet they had cyclic quakes for almost a year. I would have to say to this bloke, you may be on to something but bring the scientific proof it is the cause. I doubt he could come close. On the other hand, it isn't a bad Idea to do your own investigating, on the quakes occurances, they do seem to be of a cyclic nature but I would think vulcanology instead of moon phase, nearness to the earth. True the moon can and does effect tides, but they are far more fluid than rock, which means they are easier to be influenced. I have to pretty much call bunk on this blokes thinking at the moment.

Wayne, I have been doing my volcanology thing on NZ to see if I can give a sure nay say to that clown predictor. After checking with NASA data, I can say absolutely that scientificly there is no corelation of moon gravitational pull effecting ground faults. There is also no corelation of any planetary alignment effect. I am now in the process of looking at any ground water effects and sub surface oceanic surges that might be lubricating the fault lines of NZ. We have found here in Arkansas, the recient quake activity has a corelation with the high pressure drilling waste water injections. These have been slowed and in two cases the injection wells have been shut down completely to see if the data is correct. I know this doesn't really help you guys with what happens on the surface, but I hope knowing at least some of the things that might be causing so many fault shifts might give a bit of peace of mind.

As always I am keeping all Kiwi's in my prayers and extra prayers for my mates and their families.

This morning the Japan quakes are in front of me and I am going to see what I can find out about earth core activity, which I have been watching data on for about a year now along with magnetic field shifts. Hoping to give you guys some solid answers, knowledge of what is going on will hopefully give you a little peace somehow.

New Orleans is that way in the part of town they reclaimed from the levee. They wash the streets and then have pump trucks to pump the water out, also after a rain. Kind of crazy, but they have been doing that for a long time.

As painful as that might seem, it is probably a good idea. You could end up like New Orleans recently with everything under water that was below seal level.

Mr Ring, who used to read pets' paws for a living, caused nationwide controversy this month when he predicted a massive quake would take place in Christchurch on March 20.

Really now?? This is what the hoser did for a living before he became a Prophet? This guy is nothing but a con artist. He should be locked up as such and talk about terrioristic acts! This one takes the cake and icecream. The PM should go after this guy with a vengence and prosecute him till he won't see daylight till he's bones.

That was funny "we won't know till it stops shaking" . Your bud's shop look's just like ones in the states except he's got nissan patrol parts. I think you could buy them here for 1 year then toyota and nissan made some sort of a deal here if my memory serves me well. But some guy down here has one that he takes to shows. In fact I bet there is some other 4bys you guys get that we don't have. I think I saw a trick looking mitsubishi om naxja from iceland. Is the jeep liberty named the cherokee? Back when I had my 89 xj I was making bumpers and selling 10 lb co2 cylinders with regulator and recoil hose in a pelican watertight case and had cherokeeoutfitters.com and a crap load of native american cherokees would send me hate email everyday and told me how much they hated me and jeep using their tribes name.

I love Tshirts and not the kind you get from the mall. Like rustys offroad,'4wd,moab,papas and beer ect. and thought how cool it could be to get Tshirts from NZ like if your buds shop or any kind of tshirt from anyplace that is like a local's only tshirt from around the world. I bought something from ajsarmor and he packed it in news paper and there was a ad for a bar named crazy cooter's so I emailed him to see if he would get me a shirt and he never responded. It's possible that he thought I was mocking him because the word cooter is slang for something and I think only one cooter can call another cooter a cooter. Maybe like african americans can use dirogatory names to refer to each other but no one else. I live in cali and alot of people are kinda touchy about living in the middle here in the states and hate californians. I get alot of ain't there a bunch of queers in cali and I replie if you so worried about them you should never let them see you in your 2 sizes too small wranglers or I'm not seeing em you must be looking for them.

It's hard for me to comprehend all the after shocks cause here we get a few after a big one but nothing like you have been getting. Yeah I do live on the sanandreas fault which is the big one in cali and people from other states are deathly afraid of quakes and really get shook up after they excperience one. I find it a bit amusing they often are from areas that have tornados.

Let me know if your buds shop has tshirts I'll do a trade. The ones that are real big here now is metal mulisha and socal life I'm too old for them but the sons love em.

Latter Hooked on

Xltalk should pay you, without your posts there really would be nothing to look forward to everyday. Love that skate vid if that happened here in the late 70's that would have been me. Lots of talk here about the four quadrants of the tectonic plates and they are predicting a big ass quake in northwest here. From frisco to canada huge fault.Check out the zeta report on the net, she claims to be in contact with alliens and predicted all the quakes and is predicting the big one here. Another site to trip out on is webbot it's a computer that predicts the future and finally look up coast to coast it's out there but I find this stuff amusing.

dang wayne, they are just now getting to that scientific stuff?? bit late me thinks. I'm with you mate, with winter getting ready to hit yall, time to get folks setup for the coldies coming. If they don't know by now that CHCH is sitting on a bed of marbles, they never will figure it out and it seems a moot point for now.

I agree in a way Wayne, plans need to be made and carried out for housing and long term healing.

Look at it this way, they are actually doing that in a way. They want to know the future of CH Ch. They do the same thing when looking for oil. They thump the ground and get a sonar reading. You guys deserve to know what some educated people come up with besides that moon man.

steph74
04-07-2011, 05:38 PM
and knowing that there is still no scientific way to predict when shakes happen, I would definitely agree with you Wayne.... money should be spent in a different way.

However, I take it that your government is trying to look a little bit farther and start planning away and getting a better understanding of the geology around your parts is also going to be beneficial for the population in the long run...

Still sending prayers for all of you guys.... really hoping that solutions are going to be found for the winter...

My friend kiwis, get ready to push hard, get that ball and run for the try ;) (in other words brace yourself and prepare to fight ;))

We don't have a channel one in the states. Our channels start at two. Do you guys have chillis restaurants? A pop up for them was on the time capsule NZ link. I find post about NZ interesting we in the states don't get much info on NZ other than the quake and a report on gangs from south central LA in NZ. I also remember a show about people on yamaha wrf's riding on the beach and through the country side. You can only drive on one beach in california that I know of, pismo beach which is very cool because of the sand dunes that go right to the pacific.

You know you live in Christchurch when....

· Geonet / ChristchurchQuakeMap is your homepage

· The rest of the country offers you a place to stay

· “Munted” and “buggered” are official technical terms

· You go 'pfffff' when Wellington has a 4.5 earthquake that's 40km deep

· You see a nice park in another city and think it would make a good evacuation point

· You sleep in one suburb, shower in another and collect water from yet another

· When you drive on the right side of the road and no one thinks it's wrong

· You are happy two Policemen came for a visit

· When your bike becomes your best friend

· You think it's fine for a soldier to be stationed at the end of your street

· You see armoured vehicles driving down the road

· It’s normal to greet people with “do you need a shower?”

· A bucket of sh*t is no longer that old car you drive

· Every house is a crack house

· Instead of rushing to the clothes line to get clothes in when it rains, you put dirty washing on the line in the hope that it will rain enough to clean them

· Going to Wellington to escape earthquakes makes sense

· Your doctor recommends having a few stiff drinks before bed to help you sleep

· You know how to start and refuel a generator

· You have tied the pantry, liquor cabinet and all the cupboard doors closed and it's not to keep kids out

· You prefer to sit under the table instead of at it

· You think electronics that have "shock proof" should say to which earthquake magnitude

· You know and actually understand the terms and conditions of your House and Contents insurance policies

· You can see irony in claims about houses made of “permanent materials”

· Your en-suite has a vege garden, dog kennel and grass

· Your teenagers are only too happy to sleep in the same room as their parents

· You stop using the term “built like a brick sh*t house”

· Dressing up to "head into town" means putting on a hi-viz vest, hard hat and boots

· Discussing toilet habits with total strangers is an everyday norm

· Wee boys don't get excited when they see (another) digger or a dozer - but all the adults in the street cheer wildly

· Voluntarily staying in Timaru for five days seems like a good idea

· You know what that extra gear lever on your 4X4 is for

· Metservice includes a graph for dust

· You have dust mask tan lines

· You can use the term "liquefaction" in everyday casual conversation, even your 3-year old can

· When a massive group of students appears in your street, you feel overwhelmed with gratitude instead calling the Police. What’s more, the students leave the street in better condition than when they arrived

· The answer to where anything is ... it’s on the floor

· You smile at strangers and greet people like you’re one big family

Two earthquakes that struck within about 20 minutes of each other have shaken Canterbury and Hawke's Bay tonight.

The first earthquake, measuring magnitude-4.1, struck at 10.07pm and was centred within 5km of Lyttelton, in Canterbury. It was widely felt in Christchurch, GeoNet said.

Twenty-one minutes later, at 10.28pm, a magnitude-4.5 earthquake centred 40km southeast of Waipukurau rattled Hawke's Bay.

Lyttelton resident Annie Ferrar said the first shake "actually felt like two earthquakes".

"It brought back some memories of the February one for some reason, even though it wasn't that big."

However, "it was still big enough to rearrange some of the paintings on the wall," she said.

Police said there had been no reports of damage from either quake.

dang wayne, sure must be a lot of "adjustments needed" along those fault lines to be having nightly shakes. ya need a sling bed mate. like we suspend nitro glycerine with to keep it from going boom from any shaking action. at least then you might get that beauty rest your talking about.

Hey Wayne, some of those are cracks in the sheetrock aren't they? I have those in my house. They are no big deal. I have repaired some big ones caused when the green lumber dried and shrunk. We also get lots of cracks in concrete slabs here. We have to put lots of rebar in them for that purpose.

Steve we are(were) the only area in NZ that only needed rebar in wet areas ie kitchen, bathroom, not the entire slab

I believe Wayne's house has seriously moved and think the timber the gib (sheet rock) is attached to has moved and his foundation as well??
I stand to be corrected by Wayne if not right.
