looking for anyone who knows a good amount about the 01 xj (4.0 inline-six motor) set up under the hood. been having some problems and ive noticed the set up is different from most xjs? No distributor? Single coil? Not really sure of the set up or If my observations are accurate. Could use some help. What are the differences bewteen 01 and previous? Is there a diagram I can use to identify? any help would be appreciated. Thanks! :stars:

Chrysler got on the distributorless band wagon with the OBDII smog requirements late in the game. Other than that, everything is about the same as a 96-99 OBDII engine. What problems are you having?

Engine quits on me at some point everyday trying to see if its the fuel pump, fuel pump relay, or a spark problem. But i couldnt find distributor coil or plug wires. Not too sure what I'm looking at.

The first thing I have to ask is if there is a check engine light on and have you had it scanned for codes?

Engine light was on but i had it scanned late in 09 and april this year. Lights been off for a few months now. The first code the first time said misfire, something to do with coils. And the second time it had three codes- two cylinder misfires (cylinder 3 and5) and a general misfire. guy said basic tune up should fix it. but it doesnt have any problems starting or running. just quits, gotta let it sit for 5-10 minutes, then it starts right up, normal. I'm thinking fuel pump, or maybe the fuel pump relay is over heating?, or spark problems as well. Reason i think over heating may be involved because it doesnt matter where I am it will quit and I'll have to let it sit for a little bit. I'm thinking that may be a necessary "cool off" period? Not sure..

There is a classic thing that happens to the 4.0L engines across the board. It is the crank position sensor. It can manifest itself in various ways, but one of them is quitting and then restarting later. The problem is that if it is working at the time you check it, it will show good with a test. But this is my first suspicion.
