I want to put an exhuast on my 98, but I don't want it to be overly annoying. I just want a good rumble, nothing loud. Any suggestions? Thanks.

When I did mine I removed the stock muffler and put in a Raptor muffler , turned the pipe at the front of the rear wheel opening and went straight out there so I have no pipe over the rear and out the back. I have crushed the tip to many time comming off ledges. Its a little loud but has a nice low rumble to it .

I liked the sound of that, how much of a job is the header to do, or do you think it made much of a difference in sound without the header and just the muffler? Thanks

As mark said, it does make a difference what you do with the tail pipe. Our XJs are unibody and conduct sound really well. So if you put a mild muffler on it but don't extend the pipe out the back, it will seem loud. I have a SpinTech muffler on mine that is rated at 65 decibels. When I get on it there is no mistake it is there because the pipe stops just short of the rear bumper for the same reasons Mark cited. They can get crushed.

I have a cheery bomb raptor on mine with an immediate turn out right after the muffler and it is loud both inside and out. I agree the tail pipe is what really changed the sound.

i have a flowmaster on mine with 2 1/4 all the way from the header all the way to the back and a hiflow cat, stops just short of the back for the same reason as the 2 above me said and i love the sound of it and ive had 3 or 4 people say they liked it.

I put a 40 Series Flowmaster under mine. At idle is sounds so good. It drones when you first start it up and when you really give it gas. But if your cruising around 1500 RPM it sounds deep. I just cut out the stock muffler and welded it in with little extra pipe I picked up. Its out the back with a black chrome tip on it.

If Rene isn't looking next time his jeep its on the lift it may come up missing:thumbsup: I'll be more than happy to give him my single chambered flowmaster with the euro tip :smiley-laughing021::smiley-laughing021:

Here is what my older 2 chamber flowmaster muffler sounds like at an idle. Nice rumble to me without being annoying

Mine is pretty loud at idle, going down the road and inside. It has a removed cat and a SLP loud mouth, with stock tail pipe.

As many of you already know. Removing the catalytic converter is illegal. It damages the environment, and you can receive heavy fines. It was a very popular thing to do years ago when they first came out, especially with the muscle car folks. They were expensive to replace. That isn't the case these days, as you can buy one for $100.

I personally will not run a vehicle without one (that is required to have one).

heck you can get a hi-flow for about 79 bucks. XJ's need some back presure, so putting a free flowing exhaust in and removing the cat might do more harm then good

It's true. I think mine was a little more expensive because it had the O2 sensor fitting on it.

You can get them from Summit Racing for as little as $80 dollars. I got one with a 3" inlet and outlet for $90 and as far as I can tell, it has little or no restriction by the way the engine runs.

3" tubing is a bit large for a 4.0. In my experience they seem to like 2 or 21/4 tubing for exhaust.

Although sound is cool, muffler performance is important. I think the standard is a muffler with the highest CFM rating that sounds cool. my .02

Sound doesn't help the mpg or give horse power gains. Very good point.

That is why I went for Spin Tech. They are widely used in race applications
