Personally I would remove the trim, trim the metal back a good 2 inches, and reattach the trim. More clearance is always more better.

Actually I think I'd build me some of those flat fender things that a xjtalk member did. That would look cool, be sturdy and give max clearance.

that is in the plans but for now i would like to keep some kind if flares. im thinking about making them tie into the bumpers and the rockrails so they are a little stronger but that wont happen intill the 33in tires go on and my tires only have about 6000 miles on them so i hope it will be a while :D

When I did mine I removed the inner liner as well as the external flare and metal strap. I used the mark left by the flare to cut on, I then used TJ flares and mounted them higher so I gained quite a bit. Oh as a side note take notice of the fender support at 12:00 above the tire. With my cut out I can stuff a 33" very easy, but I did go to the extream so to speak.

i just take them off and hold them up and cut away.

then drill some more holes and put them back on.

are you for sure rubbing in the rear?
everytime i have cut my fenders i have only had to cut the front, cut the front and flex it out if you don't rub i would say don't cut. save you some time, but of course if you want to cut it then just say shut up steve i will cut if i want to.:smiley-laughing021:

the rear doesnt rub but i know it will when i go to 33's and 3.5 lift so for now ill just cut the front and wait till the 33's go on then cut as needed :smiley-laughing021:

I just did some calculating on my BFG's. Looks like I have about 30k miles on them.

That's less than 1/2 what others have obtained.

Yeah that helps me get an idea. Do you notice any clearance difference? Seems like too little to make a difference.
