Okay I've got a tapping sound coming from my distributor. I pulled the cap but everything looks fine. A friend said it might be the gear drive getting worn down. You can hear the tapping outside the vehicle. Any ideas would be appreciated?

Are you sure? There is a very common tapping noise that comes from the bolts getting loose on the flywheel and torque converter.

We put a stethoscope to the distributor, block and head and found it in the distributor. You can feel it if you put your hand on the cap.

You can buy the gear assembly by it'self and replace it, but first I'd pull it out and take a peak. (9/16 offset wrench)

If you can post some pictures of what you find please.

I'd vote for a worn pin on the dizzy gear.

Next week I'm gonna take it to the shop and then I will let you know what I find out. I'm just hoping it's not to bad.

Keep us informed as this is a learning experience for many of us. I have never had a tapping dizzy before.

Okay the tapping was the upper bushing on the distributor went south. The rotor was cutting into the cap. Installed a new distributor, cap and rotor runs like a champ. Also found three bolts had backed out of the torque converter and replaced the motor mounts.

Did you just tighten up the torque converter? Any locktight?
