View Full Version : Ethanol - Government Interference

I was talking to Tadster the other day and he was telling me his "purple" XJ gets about 17 mpg on this Ethanol crap they sell in and around the Houston area. He said he was getting 21 to 22 mpg when they would get the non-Ethanol fuel.

So that got me thinking. Maybe I'm fighting a mpg battle that isn't real. Is there anything I can add to a tank of gas to negate the effects of the 10% ethanol? driving 150 miles to a gas station that has 100% gas would be another way, but I'd rather find something local if I can.

Any ideas?

Muddy, you can try running premium. Here in CA the premium does not have the ethanol.

I will never understand how using 20% more fuel, saves the environment.

Wow! That would be easy! Never thought of checking, just assumed. Thanks.

Well, now I can get on my soap box on that one. The decision to run ethanol in gas is a political, not scientific decision pushed by the corn lobby :mad0090:

The rationale is that if you grow corn and take that carbon and put into gas and burn it and then take that CO2 and use it to grow more corn that you would not be adding that carbon to the atmosphere. You would just be recycling it. But that logic is faulty because someone forgot to tell these politicians that adding 10% ethanol reduces milage 10-20% resulting in most cases in a net loss of efficiency and thus using more oil to do the same work and you end up with more carbon added to the atmosphere. That also doesn't account for he energy needed to farm corn in the form of water and fuel for tractors etc.

It also requires the use or more oil to convert corn to fuel than is needed to make gas.

But, the worse thing is my Corn on the cob, also, cost more due to the reduce supply of corn.

If you get Stabil made for Ethonal it will help you mileage but not make it perfect again.

Also if you have a boat ALWAYS add stabil with ethonal treatment if you run gas with ethonal in it, same goes for lawn mowers, ect. Because ethonal draws in water which hurt your mileage Also.

We alway run ethonal free gas or add Stabil.

I have been running 10% Ethanol and can still squeeze out 17-18 mpg on a stock XJ. There are stations in town though that sell regular gas, they typically have signs up that say "No Ethanol".

How about running an XJ on CNG? A station on my way to work has it for $1.29.

Gas stations are require to post a sign saying they have ethonal in there gas. So you if you dont see a sign saying they have ethonal in there gas then the Dont.

Their signs are usually small stickers on each pump.

I don't think that any stations can legally sell gasoline without ethanol. I believe it is an EPA requirement that the state of Texas has to enforce.

my wife sister owns 2 gas stations here in FL , as far is i know ALL fuel here in the US contains 10% or more ethanol its a law so trying to find a place that dose not have ethanol is pointless

I don't think it is... otherwise you would think all the gas stations here advertising 100% gas would get in some trouble..

i don't care what advertising , they have 10% ethanol and if they don't advertise it someone needs to call the main office for that company

It is a law that they must show that they are selling 10% Ethanol gas, but I do not believe it is a law that the must sell 10% gas.

Maybe in some states... but not here.

Upon further review... it appears some states do require only 10% blend. Missouri, Minnesota, Hawaii, Texas and Florida are those... I am sure there maybe other states as well.

VA does not require ethanol in its gas.
WV does.
