View Full Version : Getting things in line for a big lift

So I've got my eyes on a 6.5 inch long arm lift from Rough Country (http://www.roughcountry.com/jeep_xj_6xla.html). With a lift this big I'm going to need to install a SYE (slip yoke eliminator for the youngsters). As I understand it I'm going to need a CV driveshaft along with the SYE kit.

What do I need to know about the SYE and the CV draftshaft? Rough country sells its own SYE kit and CV drivedshaft but it says that their CV driveshaft "Does NOT fit models with 6cyl automatic transmissions." I don't really see why it would make a difference but where can I look for something that will work for my application?
I'm also planning on swapping in a Ford 8.8. I don't know if this should effect any of my decisions.

In general, is there is anything else that I'm going to need to know? Are there going to be any surprises?

There are other brands of SYE. Advance adapters makes one and markets it with or without a Tom Woods driveline. What will make a difference is whether or not you have a 242 transfer case. Then your only option is the HacknTap which utilized a CV driveshaft out of the front. Also if you have upgraded to a 8.8 rear end that will take a different length driveshaft.

All these drive shaft options use a 1310 u joint, which is standard on an XJ The next step up is 1330, but I have not found a CV for that size. So if you want to upgrade from there it would be a 1350 (3/4 or 1 ton size) but you would be stuck with the 1310 on the D35 end if that is what you have. If you have a D44, the 1350 would be a god option and Advance Adapters would be the place to start because they offer a 32 spline output on their SYE to go with the extra beef.

i asked rc about why a cv drive shaft wont work and they replied that the one they offer is too long so yeah u just have to find a different one but a cv driveshaft will work they told me to call tom woods :)

Ditto!!!

As for the SYE I have around 6.5"-7" and I got a IRO Hack & Tap with out the drive shaft http://www.ironrockoffroad.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=IROR&Product_Code=IR-X_HNT but only because I already had one with new U joints. It has been the most reliable things I have done on this build. I would recommended it to anyone, if done right it is very reliable and strong. If you have a '96 or older XJ you will need a flange for the seal($50), 4*-6* rear axle shims ($25),and some good drill bits and tap all can be purchased from them, but it is a very straight forward mod. Also if you are a first time buyer mention that you saw the 10% off ad in JP mag and they will give you 10% off. Also I have heard alot of bad things about the double shear track Bar that comes with the RC kit, but you would have to ask Muddeprived about that.

I'm running the R/C double shear track bar and beside looking likes it up side down I'm happy with it. Look at my album (http://www.xjtalk.com/album.php?albumid=150) and you can see what i mean.
