I have been fighting my gas mileage ever since I lifted my 1998 Jeep Cherokee about 3 years ago.

I really didn't take notice of the gas mileage prior. Either it was about the same that I had been getting for the prior 9 years or the $1.50 to $1.80 a gallon cost I just didn't care.

I fully expected my mpg to go down due to the larger tires. It wasn't until I started reading of mpg claims on NAXJA of 17, 18 miles per gallon with simular lifts and tire sizes, that I decided I was a fool for excepting my 10+ miles per gallon.

I started with a tune up. Plugs, rotor, cap. Then the O2 sensors. I had the gears changed to 4.56 (I had larger tires plans for the future). I replaced the cracked exhaust manifold with a header. I replaced the OEM muffler and catalytic converter with a flowmaster. I replaced the plug wires. Recently I replaced the coil. I replaced the CPS. I replaced the fuel injectors. I bought an OBD II elm327 scanner that allows you to hook up your ECM to a laptop and record real time data. I've replaced the wheel bearing assemblies.

This told me I was running rich!

I cleaned the throttle body. I replaced the TPS. I replaced the IAT sensor.

Over time my mpg has increased from high 10's to a high of 13.7 mpg. I found that having the NP242 in full time 4x4 cost me about 1.5 mpg.

The most recent change were the fuel injectors. I have yet to determine if this made a positive difference yet. I should have a better idea in the next few days.

I have NOT increase the amount of air coming into the intake. K&N for example. I like the idea of this, I don't like the cost, but mainly I don't like the idea of having something like that on a 4x4 that might possibility find myself in deep water. I think the factory box affords more protection against high water than the K&N would. I do have future plans for a snorkel.

I have improved the exhaust flow, and increased the fuel atomization in the cylinder. Initial readings from the OBD II scanner show that my O2 sensor is now producing a saw tooth pattern over a much wider range, and if I understand correctly this means I am no longer running rich. I am running normal.

I recently (re-read) this article (http://www.4wheeloffroad.com/features/131_0402_jeep_xj_mileage_upgrades/index.html) on 4wheeloffroad.com. They took a 1993 Jeep Cherokee and made several modifications to improve the fuel economy. They are running 33" tires with 3.55 gears.

They increased air flow, exhaust flow and then added a Performance Distributors FireWire kit.

Based on this article and their results I decided to spend the nearly $200 for a rotor, a cap, plug wires and a coil!

I checked with several xjtalk vendors (as you should ALWAYS do) and several of them carry, or can get the Performance Distributor Firepower Ignition Kit - 4.0 Liter 6 Cylinder (4.0KIT). They do make a kit for the 2.5 as well.

Ultimately I went with Jeepin' Outfitters (http://www.jeepinoutfitters.com/scripts/default.asp). xjtalk member and vendor!

You can purchase this kit by going to this :link: (http://www.jeepinoutfitters.com/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=2169)

You can select black, blue, or red. I selected RED! :rotfl2:

I received a PM today from Jeepin' Outfitters because they noticed my XJ is a 1998. It seems the OEM cable connection to the coil changed in 1998 and 1999. This requires an adapter!

This is an additional $30(ish). You could always get an earlier model plug from the junk yard and re-wire the connector if you wanted to.

(more to come, including hopeful mpg gains!)

By the way. I neglected to mention that during this same time period of monitoring my gas mileage I have added a custom heavy duty diamond plate rear bumper with tire carrier. A custom front winch bumper (also with diamond plate) and a Superwinch epi9.0 winch. I have not noticed any loss of mpg!

Ok the Performance Distributor parts are coming in today. The mpg article on 4wheeloffroad.com says that were going to use the Autolite Platinum plugs gapped at 0.050 but the local auto parts were out so they got Bosch Platinum 2 plugs with dual tips.

I need to buy some plugs to go with the kit. Should I get the Autolite plugs, or go with the Bosch? The Bosch are the one's they used and reported the mpg gains with. I'm torn. One difference is their XJ is a 1993 with a 4.0L.

I've moved all the debugging of the installation of this kit to ... :link: (http://www.xjtalk.com/showthread.php?t=3690)

I didn't want to give the casual reader the impression that this kit had any issues.

Non scientific gas mileage report. I filled up last Friday. I drove to and from work. I worked on the Jeep Saturday, found the problem, and installed the complete kit minus the new spark plugs. I decided to leave the Champion plugs gapped at .035 for a week and see what the mpg did.

Normally I could only hope for 5 day round trip home work home. Today is the 5th day of work and I have a little less than 1/4 of a tank. I have driven about 200 miles (maybe 205). So if I get 40 miles out of my 1/4 tank (home-work-home) I'll be looking at 240+ miles on this tank of gas.

240 miles is more than I have EVER seen since I've been measuring mpg. I may have done this back when I had 3.55 gears and we went on a several hundred mile trip.

I'll know more tomorrow.

I am torn between leaving the Champion's in for another week, or putting the gapped at .065 Autolites in.

Ok results are in. I got 235 miles out of that tank. My mpg was 13.13.

mpg is sharply up, however not so much so that it is clear the 4.0KIT was a factor. Seat of the pants driving tells me it's running better, and frankly I was stepping on it more than usual.

I should run this config for another week, but screw science. I'm putting the .065 plugs in tomorrow and see if I can make this mpg gap "pun intended" wider!

After three weeks with a good running engine with the Perf Dist Firewire Kit I installed the Autolite spark plugs gapped to .060. It had a slight miss. I took it for a test drive and the "CHECK ENGINE" light would blink on acceleration. I took it back to the house. I hooked up the scanner and it indicated a problem on cylinder #2. I checked all the connections, re-started and still had the slight miss. I removed the spark plug and it looked dark in color. I may have fouled them when I was having issues with the CPS.

So after cleaning it and putting it back in, it still missed. Since it was late on a Sunday night I decide to put the Champion's back in, but I gapped them to .050. Runs like a champ, pardon the pun.

I'll run these until the memory of pouring sweat leaves my mind. I'll have to think about it, and I may e-mail Performance Distributors to see if they really think I would see a big difference between the Autolites and the Champions.

We all know how the 4.0L loves those Champion plugs.

Mudderoy, you might want to check this out about the IAT relocation, if you are looking for more mpg. It supposedly gives up to 1 to 1 1/2 more mpg. I've been considering doing it on my Grand.
