Three or four inch lifts are OK for daily drivers. Three inch with 31" tires on stock wheels is the cheapest and easiest. 4" will cost considerably more.

My first 4x4 was a 1983 Chevy pickup. I put a 4" lift and 36.5" tires on it. I had to pull myself up into the cab via the steering wheel. I loved it. Of course the Jeeps are different from the full sized trucks.

I put a 4.5" Rough Country lift on mine. I bought it from one of our vendors, 4WheelingPlus (Ron) for about $480 after shipping. That was several years ago now, plus I think shipping was cheaper then too. I love it. I have 32" tires on it now. I plan on going to 35" tires and increasing to 6.5" of lift. It's possible I'll stay with 4.5" lift if I can convince myself that I don't need the extra clearance for the 35" tires.

I only have experience with Rough Country, but I have been very happy with my lift. Contact Ron at his website 4wheelingplus.com. I believe we "xjtalk" folks get a discount over there.

I have been researching some lifts. I'm seeing alot of other things that I'm going to need. I'm going to try to do a 4.5 will I need pitman arm drop and control arm relocating brackets? thanks for all your help.

At 4.5" you can stick with the stock stuff, but you will need to get an adjustable track bar though. Check into good complete kits such as Rough Country or Rubicon Express. They will have the stuff you will need. You may save some money trying to piece one together innitally, but you will pay for it in the end.
