View Full Version : My tube flare

Well after driving the jeep flareless for 2 years, I finally got pulled over for it. The cop gave me a warning and said I have to put flares on. I have TJ flares but I really didn't want to put them on unless I had to. So, I figured I would try to build some tube flares. I am still very much a newbie at fab. so bear with me.

Here's some pics of them so far. I have 3 of them finished except for bedlining. I sprayed them flat black for now. I am going to bedline them and the bottom part of the jeep.

I am pretty happy with how they are turning out. I hope you guys enjoy the pics.

The beginning.

And here's a couple of my 14 year old son standing on them. He weighs 125 pounds, so I think they are pretty strong.

I will get better pics tomorrow. All I had was my cell phone for these pics. The flares mount with 5 bolts. On the front flares There are 3 braces I made to strengthen the flare and the fender. You can sorta see some of the braces in the 6th and 7th pics down. I put them at each end then 1 on top in the middle. I was really surprised how strong they are.

But the rear is a whole different animal. I couldnt make tabs like I did for the front because of the limited access to the back of the panel and also the wheel well itself is in the way. The rear tabs I made sticking straight out.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y241/pickoneallready/Jeep/tubeflares13.jpg

Then I made 3 slots for them to slide into in the quarter panel. The forward tab and middle tab are bolted to the inside of the wheel well The back one was too high to do that so I have a piece of angle bolted to it that holds the flare in place and spreads out the load if there's weight on the flare. The back end of the flare has a brace to the inside of the wheel well. The front end was a pain. I took out the little access panel in the door jamb and fish a bolt through there. I will get pics so you know what I mean. It's kinda hard to explain.

I like the fact that I can take these off if I have to.

very good looking flare  what tubing bender are you using ?

Captain Ruggy

I actually borrowed a bender from a friend. It's just one of those bottle jack bender type of deals. It did work ok, but it does kink the tube pretty easily.

Thanks to everyone who likes them. I still have to bedline them and the bottom of the body up to the lower body line. I am debating whether or not to bedline my whole qtr panel or just the flare.

I bought one of those and had NO success at all with them cause they kept kinking... THEN I read the directions and it says to prevent that from occuring you should fill the tube with sand and pack it and tape the ends to seal it temporarily.... I never got around to doing anymore bending cause the math was to tedious

Captain Ruggy

The thicker the wall of the pipe or tube, the easier it will be to get it to bend.I didn't pack it with sand or anything like that. If I were building a cage or something of that nature, I wouldn't use this kind of bender.

I like how the qtr panel looks done like that. I am going to bedline the flares and the qtr panles, as well as the bottoms of the ddors and the rockers. I might even do the front fenders, up to the body line. I think it will work well with the gray color of my xj.

There are lots of threads like this here. I need to go :bump: them...

look in the build thread I posted. Its on my last post at the bottom. I believe all the info and pics are in that thread.

I made these to be strong, but still be able to take them off if I ever need to. They are bolt on, but I can stand on them, which is nice for getting stuff off the roof.

I love the way these flares look.

I asked a question in the 'other' tube flair discussion, "are the tube ends of the flares welded to the body"? If not, how did you mount the ends?

Awesome work for sure... I'm coming up there to PA to steal your flares!! LOL.. Like I said in the other thread about these flares.. I would love to learn how to make flares like these one day...

I welded tabs to the ends and bolted them onto the Jeep. It's in the thread I posted on page 2.

Read the build thread. It should be pretty easy to see how I mounted them. :)

You should see if you can sell your design to a company.
