View Full Version : Upgrading Headlights - IPF?

Well of the two, maybe three things that Jeep did a absolutely horrible job in design was the headlights. It would be kind to say they are anemic at best.

I went from the stock H9(?) to the Sylvainia headlights. $20 each instead of $10 for the stock. It was better but still not what I wanted. I also replaced the factory fog light bulbs with the Sylvainia bulbs. With both sets of lights seeing the road was fine, but of course I replaced that front bumper and lost the fog lights in the process.

The first set of replacements I was looking at was the "Rectangular JeepĀ® Conversion Headlamps - SKU: RCH200-1" from www.roundeyes.com.

These accept the H4 bulbs and for $109 plus shipping you get two 60/55 watt H4 bulbs. Additional bulbs are available. A 100/55 watt bulb and a 130/90 watt bulb. Both are offroad only, but as I stated in a prior post... If those bastards can blind me with their blue lights I can blind mine with REAL lights.

Total price would be 109 + 24, or $134 to have either of the off road bulbs above.

Then there is the IPF solution.

The housings are $37.99 each. The bulbs I was looking at X4 Bulbs by IPF are $75.99 for a pair. The claim is the bulbs give off light equivlent to 155/195 watt bulbs, but only draw the equivalent of 60/80 watt bulbs.

This is a total of $37.99 x 2 + $75.99 or $151.90

So does anyone have any experience with replacement headlights? I would like to hear specifically about the IPF lights. What I'm hoping to do here is find out if it is worth the money BEFORE I buy it.

We've got IPFs on both XJ and TJ. Awesome quality, vast improvement over stock. Do an upgraded wiring harness to get the full benefit from the higher output bulbs.

That said, we sell way more of the Rampage headlights than we do the IPF, but they're also like half the price. For our own personal rigs though, we run IPF.

Thanks. I didn't know ya'll sold those. I'll have a look. I was leaning to the IPFs but I needed to hear a first hand good report.

What bulbs do you run? If X4 Bulbs by IPF how long do they/have they lasted? Does the light really look like it is 155/195 watt output?

I bought the housings locally. I am currently running the IPF Fatboys. Mine are not the current generation, but it was a vast improvement over seal beams.

Pardon my questioning, but vast would be noticeable on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being barely noticeable and 10 being worth $150!!! :rotfl2:

Let me put it this way. I can see well at night on low beams which shine a little farther, but high beams are about 3X the distance and these are legal, not HID or anything like that. And I don't get flashed

In my XJ I've got a set of almost 9 year old IPF Magic-J bulbs. Had one bulb burn out in that time. Assuming the X4 bulbs are of similar quality (they should be better actually, according to IPF), they should last quite a while.

Here's my complete install write-up on the IPFs: http://jeepin.net/features/ipf

It was a photo similar to this that originally sold me on the IPF setup. This is low beams, with the IPF housings and 55W Magic-J bulbs (left) compared to 55W sealed-beam GE high-output halogens (right). Keep in mind though that I also installed a new wiring harness.

Thanks. Great information. I need to spend more time cruising your site.

I have the Hella e-codes and they made a big improvement then I upgraded my harness to use relays to put power straight to the lights from the battery. That was my "vast" improvement.
