Hi, everyone. A few weeks ago I had to take my driver's door off to repair a cracked hinge. I figured I may as well go ahead and make the doors removable. Then I got to thinking about tube doors.

I read everything I could find about making them and every write up I found uses older chevy s10 blazer spare tire carriers. So, off to the JY I went. But they didn't have any older s10's. They did have a couple late 90's s10 blazers though. I measured the tire carriers and figured they should work, so I took 2 of them.

This is what I came up with. Since these pics, I have added a mirror to the drivers side and a rod to connect the handle to the latch to open the doors.

Hopefully these will give some others ideas for making some doors. The only thing I bought other then the spare tire carriers, was some angle for the hinge and 1/4 inch steel rod for the hinge pins. Please excuse my welds as I am still learning to weld and figured these would be a good project for a beginning welder.

I saw your tube doors and like how they look. These were just a quicker and cheaper option for me. Plus it was a good project for a beginning welder. I had a harder time getting the notches right on the angled bar then I had welding it.

Can you snap a few pics of the latching portion and Also include what modifications you had to make to the spare carriers... This is something I have been looking into doing for months now but I didnt have a way to bend tube.

It's pretty easy. Cut the big hinges off the tire carrier and the tire mount off. I also cut off the handle tabs and the angled bar. then cleaned it up with a grinder. Keep the latch and the handle, and if you can save them, the tabs for the handle.

I got some 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 x 1/8 angle to use as the hinge. I welded some tabs into the inside and welded some 1/4 inch steel dowel rod for the hinge pins.

Once you have the hinge in place on the jeep and working the way you want it to, then You can hold the tire carrier up to the hinge and cut it to the length you need. Weld it to the hinge and then figure out where the latch needs to be. Then weld the latch in place. I put the angled bar where I did because I liked how it looked there, but that's up to you. Then mount the handle where you think it would be most comfortable to you. I connected the latch to the handle with a piece of aluminum rod.

This is the only other pic I have right now of the doors. you could see the rod connecting the handle to the latch, and my mirror. If I can I will get better pics of everything this weekend.

Since I finished the doors. The first time I was driving with them, I got pulled over. The cop told me that the only problem he has was that he could see through them. And if they had a cover of some kind, they should be ok. So I had some seat covers laying around and here's what I did with them.

Riding in the summer with these doors is just plain awesome. The amount of air they leave in is crazy. Any loose papers or anything like that will blow out.
