I'm looking into getting a Safari Snorkel. I know there's one for a per 1995 models and a 1995-2001 models. There is a significant difference in price between the two. Besides the washer fluid bottle being in the way of the 1995-2001, are there any other differences?

The are no differences between the two snorkels. The extra price is because you get a replacement washer reservoir and all the tubing / wire extensions to relocate the reservoir elsewhare. You can't use or retain the existing reservoir in the 1995-2001 models as it's located in the fender exactly where the snorkel is mounted.

What I did for my 1998 XJ was buy pre 1995 version and get a suitable replacement water reservoir from a junkyard, a lot cheaper than buying the 1995-2001 package.

As cantab27 said, you can get an Airflow snorkel for half the price of a Safari and you can retain the existing water reservoir in the fender. But you can't use an Airflow if you have ABS. The reason is that all the ABS tubing in the engine bay is located exactly where the Airflow snorkel enters the engine bay i.e. there is no room.

Good luck!:D

I would rather get the airflow one but I can't find anyone who sells it under $370 with shipping.

I found it for $295, but shipping is $85. I was confused before I had looked at the ARB "Safari" but didn't like that I would have to cut my front bushwacker flair. Later I found on Go Jeep I believe that the Airflow was cheaper and would fit with the bushwackers.

I just wish I could find one in the states that wasn't close to $400.

Only if it was an emergency, then the hole would be the right size for the Airflow and the homemade would be replaced VERY quickly.

If/when I get a "throw down" XJ I'll put homemade stuff on it, but not for my purchased new daily driver.

I like home grown projects, you just have to have a little class.

I cut my Bushwacker when I fitted my Safari. I did lose a fixing but I didn't lose and rigidity on the flare.

I plan on doing a homebuilt but I dont want anything sticking out of the fenders that can get knocked off by trees - so mine will probably be routed right out of the cowl not sure yet

I did a home made cowl snorkel on mine and you can't tell I have one at all. I use my side mirrors as a gauge. if it touches the mirrors then I back out.You only see it when I open the hood. It cost me $15 to $20 for everything.Heres some pics of mine.

No you did fine. I mean everyone likes to see pictures, so they can understand more easily, and you need enough words so it makes sense. You'll noticed I asked a question about it.

The sharing of ideas like this is one of the most important parts of a good forum, or at least I think so, because it lets us know what can be done. Like me, I want a snorkel for a just in case, but I'm not sure if something what you have done would be a better solution for me. Gives me something to think about.
