Fixed all the broken studs from mudguards. The old studs just broke of. Had to detach the mudguards because of the woodpanel on the front.

Had to take my rear lift blocks out and put it back stock cause my rear leafs are bowing the other way and causing my driveshaft to bind up. So now its a pre runner lol

How much lift did you have going with the blocks??

Installed a dome-light override switch so I can turn the interior lights off when the doors are left open while working on the Jeep, or camping, or whatever.

No more running down the battery while working on the Jeep all day with the doors open.

I cut the ground wire at the Junction Block (C7, pin 7).

That took care of all the interior lights except the cargo area light. And since it already has a separate on/off switch (a previous project), I decided to leave it like that -- at first.

But the idea of having to flip two switches just bugged me. And kept on bugging me until I caved, and rewired it to work on the same switch. I know, I know:

I noticed some chunks of mud sitting on the driveway under it. They must have fallen off the Jeep after our "EXTREME Urban 4 wheeling" test drive on Sunday. Hopefully I'll get wheel spacers on today and have a chance to "nut & bolt" all the steering components that went on over the last few weeks.

I don't entirely trust it yet, but I'd love to go wheeling soon... maybe that place I heard about in town off Kirkwood? :D

I had gotten a new toolbox as a gift a few weeks ago and i bought some socket holders to help me organize them. So today was about getting my tools organized, cleaned, and some labeled. I also fitted the rear bumper with end caps, and left tail light back on for the last time for this project. I probably removed and installed that bumper 10 times throughout the process, and usually a tail light too. Found a loose reverse light bulb, so i replaced that. And finally i vacuumed the rear carpet and organized that too.

Oh, and helped my brother fit a new cps. ;)

Yesterday I started the process of replacing the rear main seal on the 1998 XJ. That meant having to remove the pan, the crank brace and the rear main. The only good things I can say is the work was at least laying down and I have a fan! :D

For any of you that haven't changed a rear main seal before it really isn't bad. That was my first time doing it and I only had two questions (I sent a text to Matt). "Can I use impact on the rear main {to remove}?" and should I use black or red RTV?

I used the impact and the red!

Now I did the soap on one side of the upper half of the rear main seal and motor oil on the inside of the rear main seal. I also used that little piece of paper thin plastic that comes with the seal. A shoe horn thing. Once I got the seal started it slide in nicely.

I only used RTV on the surfaces that was recommended. The ends above and below on the lower rear main seal. And of course on the four corners for the oil pan gasket.

I still have a leak(s) but it comes and goes. I have read that sometimes it takes a bit for the leaking to stop. I'm in no hurry to redo the oil pan gasket so I'll give it a couple of weeks and see how it does.

I have no doubts on the rear main seal, so if I continue to have a leak I'll focus on the oil pan. Matt brought me two factory pans that I'll try if I need to.

Well that was yesterday and today is 6.5" coil spring installation day! It will be work but I'm looking forward to doing something to my Jeep that will have a "cool" factor to it, instead of just getting it to do what it's supposed to do, like NOT leak oil!

I'm still concerned that dropping the rear leaf down and inch in the back is going to leave me sitting noticeable higher in the front.

Which reminds me I need to go measure it before I start.

lol Maybe this will help.

I went to the time, trouble and expense to increase my lift from 4.5" to 6.5" simply because I wanted more tire clearance. With the 33's even mild articulation was causing contact. I really want to take the old girl off road again and I'm just trying to get everything right for it. So if you're tires are clearing the fender, or perhaps you don't care, then I wouldn't worry about the lift.

I'm glad I took the measurements though, otherwise how do you know if you accomplished anything plus I can go back and compare in the future just to see how much "sag" has occurred.

A proper suspension setup should include bumpstops. That will stop the tire-to-body contact. Shouldnt matter how much lift you have. I'm on a RE 3.5" lift and on 33's. Granted I did cut my fenders, but I still had to add bumptops.

Oh, and when RE was owned by RE and not 4wheelparts, they used to actually under sell their lift heights. Like a 3.5" lift actually gave you 4"s.

If you speaking in general, yes, if you're speaking to me, bumpstops have already been installed, doesn't help when you're driving down the road, hit a dip and the tire rubs the inside of the wheel well.

Yeah I was actually just checking out the placement of those bolts last night planning out my upcoming SYE install/TC upgrades... I have read online though that if you jack up the trans and support it then pull the crossmember and trans mount... it makes it much easier.. we shall see!!! :bang:

Nice looking rims and tires!! I loved my Xtreme MT 1's that I had, wish I could afford a set of the MT 2's to wrap my new rims I got at the house!! hope this setup will work well with your steering setup!!

Been working on the flares off and on. Today, i jacked up the front to check if one of the brakes was grabbing. I got a slight pulling while braking the other day, but its since went away. They seemed fine by the way, but i'm still gonna keep a close eye on it. This thing has a problem with locking calipers. Also, changed the oil, time to go to my summer choice of oil anyway. And on the way to church tonight i stuck the little cheap camera underneath and caught a glimpsed at a possible problem, but i'll start a thread for it later.

Gave the new rear end a, about 300 mile, shakedown run today.

Nothing fell off or got too hot, .. :D

It even stopped when required, .... .... :)

.... and the handbrake actually holds the vehicle - on more than 1:1 gradients .. :smiley-laughing021:

Big blue "plastic", spring and shackle bushes, seem to work quite well ... Suspension action is smooth and quiet ... Will wait to see what happens over the long term .. ;)

Tacho is reading a bit higher - being 4.10 ratio and 30" tyres,
OD holds longer on hills, and upshifts/downshifts are even smoother when they happen,

Eye in the Sky, tells me that the dash speedo display now reads 6mph more than actual.

And even tho it was only 60*f-70*f weather ... Watching the scangauge display of the coolant temp ... Im thinking the fanclutch is benefiting from the extra coupla hundred revs ... as one would expect .. ;)

All up, I would say that my thoughts that ... the 3.55 ratio with the AW4 - was jeep/chrysler, chasing best mpg figures on a test track - rather than best, driving characteristics ... are probably justified.

Time will tell .. ;);)

Ohhhh ... and it drove funny ... being only a 2wd, for the next few days .. :D

Rear drive shaft in for DD runs ...

Rear out, and Front in - for highway runs huh ??? .... :D:D:D

Ive got a better idea .. :p ... Howzabout - LSD rear wheel drive and a proper winch, PTO that is ... run off the front shaft .. :D

Yeah the 4.10 seems like a good ratio - so far ... I think I would have preferred 3.73 as an all rounder ratio ... but beggars cant be choosers, when grabbing whats easily available .. ;)

Big test will be mpg, after Ive run a few tanks through it and compared distances ... but I dont think I'll see a lot of difference - going by yesterdays little run.

They didn't have the axle, nor the brake parts i need so we sifted through the jeeps they had and got some good stuff. My brother got a zj v8 tierod, and some window molding while we were there, and we picked up a factory tank skid off a 98 zj for our '93. I scored a older XJ rear sound bar, newer XJ 10 blade electric fan, newer XJ power mirrors, some window washer fluid level sending units (these are hard to find so i got all they had), door weatherstripping, and a few other small pieces. Not bad for about $50. I love 1/2 off weekends. :D

Today I installed my two new roof rack bars to make 4 on top of the Jeep. I figure that 3 will be used for Bear's homebrew roof rack that I'll build at some point, and the 4th I was thinking of turning into a light bar. I think Josh has one like that too and I've always liked them like that.

I also installed my passenger side A-pillar trim FINALLY since installing the A-pillar lights and brackets lol.

Installed the new rear view mirror from the jy and unloaded the front drive shaft and 2001 intake manifold.

Now this I need feedback from you guys on... I installed the clock spring I got from the jy, and my cruise control STILL doesn't work. Did I get a bad clock spring from the jy, or is it another problem? I did replace the cruise switch a while back too. The issue is that it just won't turn on.

Got ALL the crud off the outside and some out from inside of the transmission crossmember. It had to be over a pound of dirt, sand, oil, and grease. Good thing, it weighs noticeably less now. Also got the thing painted.

I've chosen to wait on installing the new mount and re-installing the crossmember till i get some degreaser and clean up the underside some, it'll be easier with those still off. I really need to fix these leaks, so they don't prematurely wear the new mount.

Yesterday i used some degreaser to clean up the gunk on the transmission/t-case above where the crossmember goes since it was easier with it out. I'll do more of it but later when i can move it somewhere better suited for the cleanup. Also bolted up the new trans mount.

This is not a hard job. Just be careful with the spark plug wires so you don't break the filaments inside.

Used it to pull my mother in law's car out of her yard. Wish I could have used it to pull my wife's van out of the yard, but the damn thing doesn't have any tow points. Instead of spending 2 hours digging it out it would have taken me a few minutes to hook up and drag it out.

The van and the MIL's car were parked under dense trees due to the potential for large hail during severe storms last night. We ended up getting torrential rains and the yard just couldn't hold the weight. However, my XJ drove all over the yard with no issues.
Wish I could have talked the wife into getting an XJ and she wouldn't have these issues, this isn't the first time I have pulled her vehicles out of the yard/driveway.

Well I got the new rear axle swapped in. And just a little fyi, the 97+ 29 spline 8.25 is a direct swap...almost. The e-brake cables are different than the ones on my 92. The only way to make it work is to swap the cables from the old axle. Also, and I can't believe I'm saying this, but after this damn axle swap, I'm never wheeling in mud again. Sure its fun but it sure ain't worth it!!!

This weekend I built a roof "rack" for my mountain bike. I only have the front bar done for now and it needs paint (black). I will build a rear cross bar to secure the rear tire. I realize it's pretty ghetto fab but it was made with things I already had laying around so it was a free mod. It's very secure and shouldn't look so bad after paint.

Might need to start a thread just for me... "What did you do to your Jeep YESTERDAY!"

As promised (several days ago) a pic of the trans mount and crossmember back on.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/CIMG4032.jpg

Yesterday i finished clearing the rear flares. It took me this long to get some time when the humidity was low enough.

I also swapped out the weatherstripping on the right rear door opening. The one of there was torn up in one spot and i picked up a good one from the jy. Although the one i got was from a '97+, assuming they were the same. They're not. But the newer style looks to seal better, even putting a slight bit of pressure against the door. Shame is i had to remove or loosen 7 interior panels and some brackets just to swap them out.

Heres a pic of the new vs. old. New is on the left.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-06-041756170.jpg

And to round out the day i jerked the shift handle off and replaced it with one from a '97+. Not sure if i like it, gonna give it a trial period and make sure it works right. Seems like a perfect fit though.

Couldn't get it posted last night but i finally got the rear flares bolted up.

Since my original brackets were beyond scrap i chose to get some oversized washers to help spread the load on the already weak mounting flanges on the flares. I cut one side down so they didn't stick down below the lip, and painted of course.

And once i get it out (in the daylight) you can count on a pic to see how it looks with the front. I think i just rolled my eyes at myself.

Looks good! I remember when my fenders looked like that!

Drove it a few miles, my belt started squeeking horribly.... AGAIN!

If it's tight enough, I wonder if the belt is glazed, or maybe some liquid is getting on it...

Nothing on the Jeep but I did replace all 12 quarts of transmission fluid and the filter in my wife's Suburban. Made an epic mess on the garage floor in the process. :banghead:

The 4L60E transmission takes 12 quarts to full it and the torque convertor. Only 5 if you just change what's in the oil pan. And at $10 a quart... OUCH!

Over the weekend i installed a set of led strips on the inside of the rear flares to match the front. I know it looks like i ran over Glow-in-the-dark Smurf but i'll just call em rock lights... to add to my real rock lights. Pffft, ain't a rock in a hundred miles.

Anyways, led count is up to 429... and counting...

Lookin good! Hmmm.... I think some bigger tires would fit nicely under there since the trim. What would you have to do to clearance the front?

Thanks, bro. The main obstacle would be the front of the fender, so that would get cut off like the '97+ xjs are. From there new bumpstops to keep the top of the tire out of the metal. And i already have the new bumpstops waiting to go in. But yeah, i would love to put 33s on it. The 31s are looking a bit small. Buuut, money and these still have tons of tread.

after 5 years of owning this XJ, today I know she has a factory security system. Opened passenger side door with key and tried to unlock all doors, she honks and headlight flashes, security light lit on instrument panel. Immediately opened hood and disconnected battery, after a while battery connected and everything is same. Googled about this and found instruction to disarm security system "Insert key to back door lock and turn back and forth twice". it works and she starts normally like nothing happened. I just asked her, after a five years of friendship and love, what else did you hide me? She remains silent :D

Finally got in some wrench time on the XJ...sandblasted the Class III hitch, cut and welded the pre-98 OEM fuel tank skid to work with my '99, and did several fit tests.

Tweaked further, got longer bolts, and finally got the new shackles installed and heading towards having the rear lift completed!
