Took the risk of playing in some mud here in the desert for a few hours. Had a blast and hoped like hell the steering pulley wouldn't come apart. Frigging pulley is scheduled for delivery tomorrow, A flipping week and a half for shipping. I think I'm going to be an ex Autozone customer. Who do you all use for ordering parts on the internet from. I've used cragen but O'rially bought them out and I haven't used them yet.

I've used RockAuto.com quite a bit and haven't been disappointed so far. Great prices, but watch for shipping costs. Also, Amazon.com through our amazon link is a great way to get parts ;)

I FINALLY have a 2" hitch!

Earlier in the week i got the hitch painted and Saturday fitted it up to the Jeep. I was having some back problems so i couldn't do it sooner.

I did have to make another rubber part of the hanger, the other one split. Time will tell if this will hold up well.

Because the hitch is so close to the bumper i couldn't get the four inner bolts in. Not sure how i'm gonna deal with that yet.

I ended up with only 1/8" between the hitch and skid plate. Also, only about 1/8" from the tailpipe to the skid, but it doesn't seem to hit.

Replaced my battery cable terminals. The cables had worn and corroded until there were only about three strands of wire holding it all together. It died when I went to the store this morning after I came home from the great white north (KS and IA LOL). I don't know how it's been running. When I turned on the lights, wipers, and defroster on high, I guess those three little strands of wire couldn't handle the amps and it quit totally. I did a roadside diagnosis, crossed my fingers, said a short prayer.....and....SHe fired right back up, though, and took me to the parts store and back home. Seems fine now. Tomorrow, I think, will be amateur radio install!! Yayyy!!

Hosed down the steering stabilizer bolts with some penetrant twice today. Tackling that tomorrow, hopefully it goes smooth. Already have the stabilizer and I'm going to try out a pitman arm puller for separating it from the drag link. I've got myself all prepared for it to be difficult, so that usually means it will go easy. It's the ones that I think are going to be cake and don't research that always prove to be tough.

I just did my stabilizer on my 98 tonight.. I didn't hit it at all with penetrating oil, and I just used a small breaker bar I have, and it all came apart fairly easily, with the use of a pitman arm puller... My new bolt on the axle end, is way too long though, so made it work for now, and will pick up a much shorter bolt shortly...

Yeah, mine has the torx 60. It's the second time I have done it. The first time I bought the seals from AZone. I went to the stealership today and just bought it from them. Tore it up. Dammit!!! Now I need a new fender, header panel, and god knows what headlight hardware. Wasn't really my fault and in not really upset about it. That fender had the only dent on the jeep when I got it and the header panel needed replaced anyway. The headlights wouldn't aim and a lot of the plastic was broken out where screws were missing. Just another project and excuse to upgrade the lights and grill.

I didn't hit anything. Someone drug a trailer loaded with junk hanging over the sides across It. Technically, I shouldn't have been parked there. Every one in my little town always has parked there, and so do I. Also, he shouldn't have had crap hanging off the side of his trailer or hit something stationary. It was kind of a draw, I guess. I've been wanting a new fender and header panel so I could get rid of the dent and aim my headlights. One of those deals I guess. Glad the damage wasn't too awfully expensive and stuff I'd planned to replace anyway.

Not today, but a few days ago I added two more 55w light. Put them on either side of my winch. Instead of running wire through the center hole in the bracket, I tapped a hole and bolted them down with a lock washer. The cool thing ( I think at least) is they can point straight forward, or to the side in just about and direction. So if I get into some serious rock crawling, I can point them down and out and have better view of the line my front tires are taking. Also shared the switch wire off my other lights, so one switch control 4 lights on 2 relays! and they're pretty bright. not bad for 18 bones at Wally World!

Took it to get some grub and got a few things going on.

The steering doesn't want to return to center by itself sometimes.

Heard a squeak, and believe its coming from the rear. Although it quieted down by the time i got home so i couldn't hear it to track it down. Hope its not those rear brakes going metal on metal. I'll check it out tomorrow.

And it seems lately to be taking a few more revolutions to start up. When its cold its always taken a few but seems to be getting worse. If i remember correctly that would be the fuel pressure regulator.

Thoughts?

I've been awake almost all night, couldn't really sleep. Convinced myself I needed to find a 5th matching tire just in case something happens to one and it can't be repaired, as they are discontinued. As luck would have it, Tire Rack had one, and only one, left. It's probably going to spend it's entire life in the back of my Jeep, but I guess I need a full size spare anyway. Just need another center cap to go on my junkyard wheel and I'll be set.
I'm going to go get some lug nuts to replace the ones that lost their cap here in a bit. Don't really feel like carrying around another wrench for just a few nuts, and they are cheap to replace.

As for the steering, is the steering box tightened a little too much?

My rear leafs were squeaking... Creekside took care of that for me :D lol

When my starter was going out, it would take longer and longer to crank until it eventually didn't crank. Replaced it and boom! Started faster than it ever has! BUT, it would be fuel pressure regulator too. Do you let the fuel pump stop before cranking it?

Not sure, Matts the one who tightened it.

Lol, Nah this is rotational.

I've thought of the starter as well. I guess i need to check the fuel pressure. I've tried turning the key to the on position a couple times to build pressure before cranking and it made no difference.

Finally got to turn wrenches today....:D Got to looking at unibody rail cracks I found weeks back when I was trying to prepare to install a OEM gas tank skid and clean/paint my receiver hitch. Found another crack...

Dropped the fuel tank (wish it was NOT half full) to make room after finding my fuel line tools, cleaned things up with a wire brush and used my Dremel to clean up the cracks to prepare for welding.

Went ahead and wire brushed the oval tube through the unibody rail for the fuel tank fill hose, and coated with Permatex rust converter.

Then started welding....:rolleye0012: whoops, turn the amps down, that unbody is thin...fry eggs, cool, fry eggs, cool, fry eggs, cool....wire brush...fry eggs, cool, fry eggs, cool....wirebrush....start cleaning up with a flap disk....there! there are 5 XJ's in the family. All have relatively new batteries and I have redone the battery cables on al 5. They all start differently. I do not know if they all have the same starter(I doubt it). The point I'm making is fuel delivery and what kind of starter you have can indeed make a difference when it comes to starting.

I jacked it up and pulled off the wheels and drums. Looks generally okay. Shoes are still low on material, apparently those regenerating shoes didn't work. :D Cruddy on the passengers side, so i can't help but wonder if i have a leaky wheel cylinder. Not wet but stuff has gathered there like its sticking to it. But other than the shoes being a little shiny i didn't see anything wrong. I scuffed up the shoes and put it back together. Seemed fine all night.

Finished up the Hella 500 covers. Too dark, so pic tomorrow.

Replaced the rear wiper blade.

"Rented" a fuel pressure gauge from Autozone for $150! Now that seems a bit steep to me. Especially since they sell one for $45. Anyways, haven't gotten to use it yet. Also got a fuel filter, needed to replace it anyway.

And i got it dirty again. :p

I changed out the wiper blades last night. I did the rear this fall because it was totally destroyed, but wanted to get a winter out of the fronts. Amazing what a difference new wiper blades make. Every time I change them, I ask myself why I don't change them more often. Maybe so I can save $10 over the course of 2 years?

The $150 rented fuel pressure gauge wasn't calibrated right. Showed 25 psi even when unconnected. So that was a bust. I did change out the filter though. The old one showed a bit of rust when i shook it out after removal. And i am pretty sure that was the original filter too, it had undercoating on certain places. :p

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-03-171630320.jpg

Oh, and i adjusted the exhaust hanger to get it back away the skid to keep it from tapping it. Was a little loose so i may need to figure another way to tighten it.

Day two of getting to work on the XJ! :D

Ran to Advance in the AM to get some good 3m undercoating, got back, rolled under the XJ with a bottle of Greased Lightening set to "foam".....sprayed everything down, let it set while I drug 75' of hose from one end of the hose to the other.

Got my high pressure nozzle and rinsed, looked almost factory clean...:D...okay, while that dries, I'll start on the front bolts on the rear leaf springs.....

(many hours pass)

After (3) 4.5" thin cutting wheels, one smoking interior incident when I got irritated and got out the "gas axe":rolleye0012:, lots MORE PB Blaster, hammering, hammering with a bigger hammer, chisel work, pry bars, (stupid bushing is SEIZED to the bolt) MORE PB blaster, more hammering:bang:, more cutting, CAREFUL work with a propane torch, MORE prying....

Blasted bolt is MOCKING me :mock:

The driver side front spring bolt is OUT, and the old leaf pack is.....abused.

Now that I can form coherent sentences, that was a royal pain...none of the days of PD Blaster sprayed did anything until I could get to the split in that sleeve and break things loose.

Good news is the frame nut's threads look perfect....:D

Will try to work on the other side this week. Where can I get new hardware if I can't clean this old bolt up on a wire wheel?

I saw the same after replacing my RMS. I ended up dropping the pan again and adding a dab of quick dry RTV on either side of the seal. That, so far, has seemed to fix the lingering leak.

Had some spare time last night so I decided to "FAB" a handle on my hood so I could open it. I know.....why a handle? I was having problems with breaking the release cable for my hood. just couldn't figure out what was causing it to brake so in good country boy fashion I ripped out the cable and cut out all the hardware with the plan to install hood pins.

GREAT IDEA! except after I cut everything out and installed the new pins, closed the hood and realized........the hood doesn't pop up so one can get his fingers under it to lift it. DAMN I cut out the springs too!

So that's why I have a handle and here are some pics of it!

The top box are shocks and hardware(u-bolts, etc.) The middle box are the coils. The bottom skinny box are AAL's. I would have gone with new springs, but budget wouldn't allow it right now. I still have lower control arms coming. Those should be here Thurs. or Fri.

Put 100 miles on it driving to the NCAA tournament. I haven't taken it on many longer trips, I usually drive 4 miles to work. It's funny that I like driving longer distances on the freeway, because I know my MPG on my next tank will be better even though I used more gas than I normally would.

"Out with the old, in with the new"

I was having a hard start scenario in my '87 XJ, so I went and bought a crank sensor from NAPA, costed $34-some-odd cents.

I pulled the front driveshaft to get more clearance, and I'm glad I did. I got the old CPS out within 40 minutes (this is my first time doing this, and I kept getting road muck in my eyes) ... that thing was so dirty I couldn't even describe it. I put the new one in and it started. Hopefully this will fix the sometimes hard start, but at least I'm guaranteed my CPS won't fail anytime soon.

I noticed the wiring on the new one was only half as long as the "original", what's up with that.

It was a pita to install, and at first, the approach angle was hard to get use to "eye sore" imho. Now that I have the 33's, I love the look. It has also taken a beating and has withstood a lot of hard hits to rocks... I LOVE it:-) I also have the rear smitty, it is amazing too... Although had to use a torch for install... Lol

Edit will post pics later today for you

Jake how do you like those BFG in real mud? Got em on my Toyota but haven't tested them out yet..

Honestly, they leave some to be desired. Not horrible if you keep em spinning to clear the tread but they get filled up pretty easy if not. But i don't have much else to compare it to, these are the only tires I've ran in mud.

gotcha. My buddy runs those on his 4x4 chevy that sees a lot of road miles and they have great tread life from what he says. I'll may try something else, just don't like the idea of replacing mud tires frequently. Thx for the reply

Oh yeah, they're great on road. Good feel and great mileage. We've run these on our work trucks too. It a good tire, just not so much for mud.

I changed the valve cores in the tires cause 1 was leaking. The I went to install a fan shroud and cut my left pointer finger bad cutting a zip tie. I cut almost half way around, oddly enough it never hurt. I was going to put in a new steering stabilizer after that but with no air tools and 1 useless hand decided to call it a day. If someone wants to see the finger I'll post it but it was messy, may serve as some kind of reminder?

Ever since i trimmed the front fenders I've wanted to get the rears cut too. So, now i'm contemplating it. I removed the rear flares to get a better look for thoughts. Still thinkin on how far i want to take this. You can see a bit of rust uncovered toward the rear.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-03-30191934.jpg

What's left of the brackets that go up in the flares. The ones on the front of both flares pretty much disintegrated and fell out while trying to loosen them. But i'm thinking they kinda sacrificed themselves for the sake of the body.

I can fix you up with some 3/4 ton bastard packs

Believe it or not, all that crap doesn't hardly weigh anything...it just takes up a bunch of space. All that stuff actually goes on me or the kayak in the winter time.

I actually carry a lot less stuff in the summer, because I don't need all the cold weather gear.

To be honest, in that picture, all of my fly gear is included with the conventional bass fishing gear. Also, all my big heavy catfishing gear is in there, too. So, I guess it is more than I normally paddle out with. I never go out with any two. I fish conventional bass gear, OR fly fishing gear, OR cat fishing gear, never combine them.

Just came in from putting the oil to the undercarriage of my Jeep. She's grounded. The BEST tire on it has about a nine inch section on the inside where the tread meets the sidewall that has cord sticking out. I can't believe that it's the tire with the deepest tread. None of them are bald, either. IN any case, I need to buy tires and I can't buy tires until I get the lift on....SO....my beloved XJ is now deemed to be not roadworthy without a lift.:cry:

So, What did I do to my Jeep today? I changed the oil, sprayed the living bajeezus out of all the bolts on the underside, AND grounded her.:o:(:(:(

Nothing like a little incentive Nate.

Paddletrucker
04-02-2013, 12:03 PM
Well, yeah, I suppose. I originally was going to have it done after I had got a little more wear on the tires. I expected to do that winter 2011/2012. Some things changed for me in 2012, and I didn't do anything to the Jeep, or fish, or do anything besides try to save my business and work my hind end off. Besides all that, I just didn't want to stop driving the thing long enough to do the lift. I like it and the lower height of the roof was handy for loading the kayak, after all.

This year, after I'd clawed my way back to where I could breathe a little, I'd planned to do it this past January in my father in law's shop, which is well equipped. I only have a gravel driveway and shade tree, and the two aren't close to each other. LOL. I also don't have a whole lot of tools, so it made sense to do it up there.

Then, he went to the hospital for a few rounds of surgery. He was in and out all winter and didn't feel up to helping me. He's decided he wants to help me rather than loan me the use of his shop, even though he would. He wants to help and that's fine with me. I'd planned to go ahead and wait until we could both do it there, but it looks like I might be doing it under the shade tree in the yard.

Now I've got to drive my pickup, the only vehicle I've ever owned with an automatic transmission and I sure hate it for that reason!!

Can't find the clutch pedal?

Paddletrucker
04-02-2013, 01:11 PM
I don't feel like I've got as much control, I think. I've logged a little over two million miles now in a semi, all manual tranny. I generally always leave the truck in town and commute in the Jeep. Before I owned my own semi, I'd make the 50 mile commute to work, shifting gears, so that I could get there...and shift gears.

I figure about 26,000 miles per year going back and forth, another 110,000-120,000 miles/year in big trucks, and a couple of hundred miles each weekend on fishing assault missions, ALL in manual transmissions. I used to rodeo a lot and my wife and I made a good part of our living trading horses. We hauled LOTS of horses with pickup trucks and it was all manual transmissions, too. I think that was the biggest deciding factor. You haul horses and TRY to do it as smoothly as possible. Anytime I've ever thrown a horse around in a trailer, it was due to the auto tranny making an abrupt shift.

Here's where I'll really get in trouble.....I see a lot on forums (particularly XJ forums) about how an auto is better for wheeling. I just don't see it. Granted, I haven't wheeled the XJ yet, but have had pickups in a lot of precarious situations on the ranch. Every time I've been in a bad spot with an auto, it turned out badly. "I need a little more gas, a little more, a little teeny bit more.....OH CRAP!! Too much!!" I like being able to slip the clutch. It's NOT more complicated to me, it's easier.

I think maybe it simply has to do with what you're used to. If you don't have 5,000 miles total driving a stick, I'm sure you ARE a better driver in an auto. Same for me. I drive sticks almost exclusively. No way I can be as good in something that's foreign to me.

I looked long and hard to find a 5 speed XJ. I can't understand why there aren't more of them.

You are right, a stick gives you more control. I wheeled with a stick until my present XJ, which had a stick when I bought it. But I changed motors and the smog police made me get the auto. Long story. Anyway, I do appreciate the auto for the most part in the big rocks we wheel here. Left leg would be pretty tired by the end of the day. Had that happen in my pickup in Seattle stop and go traffic for hours too. But for highway driving, mud wheeling, snow wheeling trail running I too prefer the stick

Crap! You got caught in the hail last night? Was there any damage to the Jeep?

doesn't slipping the clutch like that do damage to it?

Well, in theory. But I have wheeled Fordyce many years ago with a three speed and 2.0 split in the transfer case. If you know how to use the clutch and gears correctly, there is not as much stop and go and goosing the gas as with an auto

Damage? No. Wear? Sure. Clutches wear out...eventually. Every morning, I have to back my tractor/trailer into a REALLY difficult spot. Uphill slightly and really tight. Yes, it's wearing on my clutch more than if I was backing straight into a spot on level ground, but I doubt I'll notice too big a difference in the time between clutch replacement. My tractor has 1.8 MILLION miles on it and it's THIRD clutch is in GREAT shape and I plan to run that clutch another 300,000 or so. Same with 4 wheeling. It'll wear the clutch, but if you're doing it right, not too awfully bad. PRobably not enough to make a noticeable difference in the overall life of the clutch. I'd rather have the control and service a clutch a few times over the life of the vehicle.

My XJ has 237,000 highway miles on the original clutch. It's still FINE. I have no intention of replacing it anytime soon. If I do, though, it's not a huge deal. I just wish it was adjustable like clutches of old. One more of the many reasons my semi is a '96 and I haven't upgraded to a newer one. I like the adjustable clutches over the hydraulic ones. I don't have slave cylinder issues and can adjust it. Wish my XJ had that!!

It's all in what you're used to, I think. I'll bet I can tear up an AW4 a lot faster than I can wear out my clutch and AX-15. I've owned ONE vehicle with an auto tranny, and I've managed have to replace it after 123,000 miles. At 156,000, I'm having more issues with it. It'll also be my LAST automatic vehicle.

Put tires back on the Grizzly and then like a page out of National Geographic it and the White Buffalo became friends out of their natural habitat.

Finished the in-cab winch controls, and added some LEDs in the grill to illuminate the winch for nighttime winching.

I don't think I've ever had to use my winch in the dark, but it's best to be prepared, right? ;)

Just got done pulling the complete exhaust from the mid pipe back... replaced the cat with a new one due to the O2 sensor bung tearing out of the old one... Good thing too, cause once I got the old one out, there was another hole starting to rust through, and the complete insides were sliding back and forth and making all kinds of rattling noises... So now I got a brand new cat and O2 sensor, got the mid pipe to not be hitting the crossmember anymore (which is one annoying sound by the way)... and the rear tip doesn't rattle against the spring bolt or the heat sheild for the gas tank, like it has been doing since I installed the catback over a year and half ago... It runs nicer now, a tad bit quieter... but nicer... I do notice now though, that the muffler seems to heat up a bit more than it did before... but then again, it is probably burning off all the PB Blaster I had to use to get it off the old cat.. LOL

Now for the RMS, Oil pan seal and trans fitler & seal.... for another day... Maybe tomorrow if the weather holds out...

Took my jeep over to Matt's shop to pull the diff cover on the front. The front end is making noise and binding up. So Matt suggested to pop off the cover and see what was going on. It was BAD in there!! Somebody replaced my diff oil with chocolate pudding!! Bearings are trashed....xj is gonna be down for a while.
