I am in sort of a quandary about my hood vents. Here is my XJ

As you can see I have a lot of aluminum on it. I need to do something with those holes I have in my hood now. As I see it, I have two options. Make an aluminum louver in the shape of the holes.

I laid this scrap piece on. It is mill fininsh instead of brushed like the rest.

Or I can make the door trim and bar-b-que grill style.

Which do you think?

I love the trim and grill style

You also need some vents into the front skirt that you designed below the bumper. More air in will result in more air out as well.

I thought about that. I am not sure I want to do that. I seem to be developing pressure below and not allowing the air from the engine compartment to escape with the hood on. Take the hood off and I have no problems. So, can you say swiss cheese hood?

How about putting vent in the skirt as mentioned and a cowl induction scoop to allow heated air to escape. The air will have to flow over your engine to reach the exit at the firewall, thus keeping your underhood temps down.

You are talking about the fenderwell correct? I am not sure I want to mess with that since it is part of the front suspension. A good idea though. May cars have this designed in at the factory including early Jeeps

No I am refering to a cowl induction hood scoop like the 70 Camaros had.

Could do that. Those hoods are spendy though. If what I am doing doesn't turn out right, then I will look into that.

NACA vents can move a lot of air smoothly in or out, just depends on how you mount them. this pic is from an outfit in the UK but you can make them yourself pretty easily. Ron Fourtneia (sp) in his book the fabricators hand book shows the whole process.

This is what I settled on. I built them like you described in your other post.

That's what I have. I used a 280zx hood scoop for mine. I'm interested in the fan on hood idea also... But the whole me going through the water all the time may put a damper on that.

shouldnt be an issue... these fans sit higher than the ones UNDER the hood... the connections are waterproof... PLUS you can put em on a switch to where they get no current while in off position...

I know but I worry about my fans that are under my hood too... lol. My hood spends as much time under water as it does over haha

I can understand the confusion. I set it up to blow in for two reasons. While driving or idling, heat goes out of the hood when they don't operate. They have thermostats in them cooling core on the backside that come on at 160°. Even the hot air cools the oil and keeps the oil temp down. But when that fails to do the job, then the fans come on and blow cool air on the cooling coils. They also blow cooler air across the headers, a plus when wheeling on hot days when the floor boards can get hot. The vents are large enough that my underhood temps are very low compared to what they used to be, which would melt the plastic stuff there and cook your feet.

I made them from scratch to fit the largest opening I could get in my hood. If you want, I can tell you how.

no the fans... where did you get those... are they off a certain vehicle or are they a setup from a vendor?

those fans look like 10" ones to me. Jy's should have some cars that use that size.

There are JY fans that are that size, but not in CFM. Most small OEM fans are in the 1000 CFM range. these put out 2200 CFM

ahhhh, I tend to buy new fans myself I have terrible luck with electric parts from the local JY's
