My boss is about to send a 98 Land Rover discovery to the scrapper,

What are people's thoughts on swapping diffs to the xj?

I know with the sealed knuckles and those massive lug pattern would make it a huge advantage

Any thoughts, ideas, or experience?https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170803/1c8c1620f97a1bb7b980bf8ac58d57f4.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170803/1efd3a8204bd44275f3dd4a4a2f88ba8.jpg

Weak Link: Rear Axleshafts
Models Affected: All
What Happens: Even with the full-floating design, early Discovery I models are not exempt from rear-axle breakage. The axleshafts, at 32 mm and 24 splines, are comparable to a Dana 35 in terms of strength. The semi-floating shafts in Discovery IIs are even weaker. Once the differential has been upgraded to a limited-slip or locker, the axleshafts become the weak link in the chain.
Sturdy Fix: Great Basin Rovers manufactures heavy-duty axleshafts that are made of aviation-grade chromoly. These shafts are available for both the Discovery and D II and offer bolt-in installation while being significantly stronger than stock.

Weak Link: Stock Two-Pinion Carrier
Models Affected: All
What Happens: All U.S.-specification Discoverys, both early and late models, came factory-equipped with two-pinion differential carriers. They also had small crosspins that were prone to breakage when subjected to hard use on the trail.
Sturdy Fix: A variety of stronger carriers are available from Great Basin Rovers, from four-pinion open carriers, to Truetracs, Air Lockers, or Detroit Lockers. Each user's needs will vary depending on intended use and budget, but all of these options are significantly more robust than the stock differential. Great Basin Rovers is a full-on differential remanufacturing facility and can supply completely remanufactured exchange differentials to your exact specifications.

don't do it. you think jeep parts are expensive, try replacing something on a LR. after market support is improving, but nothing like jeep stuff

also would have to do coil conversion

That's good to know,

I guess what I'm asking is do you think rear disk brakes, increase in hub size, and the fact that those axles were meant to carry a vehicle that weighs 3x as much be worth the long hours and effort to make the swap? Or should I just save time and start saving money

what year is your jeep? looks like lots of fab work for no gain if you have D35. you're going backwards if you have 8.25

I think I'll hold off on that I already have a rebuilt front and rear in the parts Jeep, thanks everyone for input, I figured Land Rover would wipe the floor with whatever, Dana power wins

Wheel bearing:
Duralast Autozone brand...
Discovery II: $191.99
XJ: $69.99

MOOG brand
Discovery II: $430.99 EACH!
XJ: $99.99

Build an 8.25, 8.8, or go 1ton...... my opinion.

My advise, don't even bother. First of all, both of those diffs are offset to the right. Rear is offset instead of centered. Second, front diff is also offset to the passenger side which is the wrong side for your transfer case. So you couldn't hook it up. This is a really poor candidate for an axle swap
