View Full Version : 95 XJ Hello!

Hey, what's up? I just got in the Jeep game, always wanted to but opportunity presented itself with:

A running/driving/4wd 95 XJ for 200 bucks.

A 94 XJ with 4.5 skyjacker short arm lift and 35" Mickey Thompson's with a blown motor

Another totalled 94 with rebuilt motor, borla exhaust headers back, reman transmission, new rear Dana

So my house looks like a used car lot, but I promised my wife she could have the lifted Mickey and I swap motors, plus it's got all the power windows etc

Tranny I'd probably put in mine with the new dana

Love working on these things, and thank y'all for the knowledge resources!

Getting the engine in, not hard. You can buy premade mounts. However, you will have to ditch the headers, have a minimum 4.5" lift, larger radiator and have some small issues like throttle linkage, temp and oil sensors etc.

Not that so much, just getting two different car companies to match up. Having a carb makes it much easier though. I had CA smog laws to satisfy. But every engine swap I have ever done, the small stuff was what took the most work and took the longest

If you have some fab skills, then you should be able to do it. The one thing you will need to fab is the tranny mount. No one makes one to buy.

Alright floorboards are done! I also got rid of flares and trim, swapped an old set of rims for a old set of 31x10.5x15's and cut fenders and folded quarters

Ended up buying a new welder 220/110 and running it on 110 it blew up week 2, so it's been sent off to get fixed

I took some separated metal to go over the floorboards, was a pain to beat in and weld but it definitely stiffened the body some

Por15 on top of thathttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170909/62d668654c10e3215af05210f717d214.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170909/aa6d37f049aae666d6ac1781857ebf2e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170909/e2c3bdab673512dcd0e03f44fe2d6137.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170909/39be3a14f07e8286feb1b5654fcba771.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170909/d7b1be794a50b215d011f2bd5679e402.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170909/3f792b7d321f7710f5d4dadddf814189.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170909/1b240699f789e8b74f59996df1909f39.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170909/f9346a679e3782dfeda6c328f6f1310d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170909/e993997f0456d6e75f3409c0e2bc2b7b.jpg

I didn't take too many pictures after that first layer of fiberglass that was right after the welder went off like a .22 twice and shut down

Got the rest of the floor and the separated metal welded in at work, I also moved back the crossbar on the driver's side a inch for a little extra leg room

When I was welding in the separated metal I cut to pieces tfor the driver's side and beat it in, and beat it in and beat it in, was much easier with smaller pieces on the passenger side

More fiberglass

Finished it off with herculiner

I really don't think it makes any difference. Just do it on flat ground with springs that are holding the vehicle at equal height side to side. In other words no corner sag so yo don't weld in a twist. I think it is best to use car stands to support it so you can control it

So I lucked out on the Craigslist, I found a set of 5, 33x12.5x15 general grabbers offset rims included for $470 at least half the tread left, went and ran it through the mud on some hunting property last weekend,

Honestly, I'm probably going to go back to the 31's I don't really have the gears yet for tires that large and tranny is running hot enough to turn the floorboards into a space heater, so did the amsoil pan drop filter change yesterday it helped a bit but a tranny cooler is on the to do list

And as you can see, no lift is absolutely no flex at all, but kinda funny, ended up going with a Rusty's off-road 4.5 with an add a leaf, haven't installed yet, when I was going to take the leafs off of the parts Jeep to make the bastard packs I ended up fighting tooth and nail. Burned myself, busted a few knuckles

So I bitched out and ordered Rubicon express 3.5''s I think with the shackles I got with the Rusty's I'm looking at 5.5 in the rear and 4.5 in the front but I think the weight I plan to add in the rear will level her out

But I am liking the look so far, I'll throw the mud videos together eventually, was funhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170924/fe3204461142bdbc9d62f7b936676647.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170924/7a8dcb27108a507733d7b814c7b5700d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170924/599c29693b1ba1d523fa71115ae34e2a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170924/b71d63045be9c0ec4f2b031729f01003.jpg

Yes, they are sensitive to taller tires

Allgood Auto

This may seem a little long winded.

Random thought, transmission is running hot with the larger tires, and the motors run hot anyway in the HO4.0.

Mercedes Benz runs their freon lines for the AC around fuel lines to cool the fuel for maximum combustion and efficiency.

The Mercedes reference is why I'm trying to look into cooling system pressures, how much pressure would a Jeep radiator hold during a hot run cycle.

So I could look into say a freon charged kind of cooler, say if the transmission cooler in the radiator would hold 150 lbs of pressure, why not charge that with freon and add another external cooler for the tranny?

Would it be better to add a cooler to the front charged with freon to cool everything all together?

Just random thoughts I've had, I'm curious to know if anyone else has had any experience, thoughts, or know any resources I could use to answer the questions that have been bugging me.

I tried to explain all that to Google but she just didn't understand the search criteria.

You raise several issues here. One is that the radiator isn't good for anything over 30#. As far as the AC lines wrapped around the fuel line goes. The single line system on the 96+ would work for that. Earlier lines return to the tank and are constantly circulated. But cooler fuel is a cheap horsepower trick from way back. But there is a trade off. To get cold out of an AC return line, it first has to be compressed and thereby heated and allowed to dissipate some of that heat usually in front of the radiator, which in turn will make it harder to cool. So it is kind of a catch 22

Allgood Auto

Interesting, ok external tranny cooler it is. Weathers about to cool off down here anyway. I'm still curious i might put that back for a later. Thanks man

The external trans cooler is the best way to go with bypassing the one in the radiator. It will help keep both cooler.

XJ is looking good.. the 4.5" lift is like a just right lift height to go with... and is plenty to get out and have a blast with... Why do you feel you need more lift in the front end, just to help clear the tires when tucked, or to level it out?? I'd say give the suspension a little bit of time to break in before you feel like ditching the rear leafs, or anything like that... or even to add more to try and even out the front end, fi that is the reason you are waiting to add lift to the front.. I thought I was going to have to fight and add spacers on my front end, but in the end, I just loosened the rear leafs a bit, loaded the back end for a day or two... and then pulled the added weight, and tightened everything back up... and has been good since then... and that seemed to help how the rear felt after the lift... Where did you guys run this past weekend in NC?? Would love to check out that place, especially that ditch you're running...

Thanks all for the input and props!!!

Actually had a trans cooler laying around at work so I'm saving it for after winter time, I need a new radiator and to blow all the crud out of the system, also would like to switch to an electric fan. I'll do that all at once

Blue, I'm actually really digging the height in the rear and like in those wash outs just felt like I could have used just a little more clearance, I do want to level it out and I can get the pucks for free

Also, if you're at pope, it's only about an hour, it's on 421 8 miles passed Lillington toward Sanford hit me up we'll go again

nice. like how it sticks out further than the test fit. gotta beef up then reattach front on mine. yanked it off last time out

I appreciate it!

Honestly I kinda liked that tight fit but it didn't have the extra support. I was trying to weld part of it with the flux core when I was waiting for gas (that crap is nasty welds) so I'm sure I'll break it off at some point. Lol

The winch arrived, I think ups didn't know how to handle a 66lb winch

Don't mind the 40 waterhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171210/0b52de94fbae8c15cafc78fb5ae6d5a4.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171210/aa0428a789a137cecbc0a6dd0bb15374.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171210/93efdd4cd2b530278dda8d4cc318bdd3.jpg

The threads we're totally stripped out for the engage disengage switch so I'm fighting with the seller to replace it

No sense in not mounting it up though

I think I went a little overkill on the winch but, was a good dealhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171210/30772c73b80a4b1d6b44906412ac3efe.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171210/0365cb1e1350ce94594d3b3dfbfadd99.jpg
