So last night i went to a local meet and greet/BBQ in Minneapolis. Its put on by Eurowerks, which is a large local car club that im a part of in my spare time. I have owned 11 VW's, so i feel like its part of my life to be able to attend these things and to stay a part of the Euro community.

Last night we had a special guest. Mr. Jamie Orr, the owner/operator of Orchid Euro in PA. He has been all over the forums and Jalopnic etc for his story about this Harlequin Golf that he found in a salvage yard in CA. Long story short, he flew out there, and a bunch of guys from the euro community helped him get it running and driving, and now he is driving it back to PA to resurrect/save it. He first saw this car on Sunday, and here he is, 3 days later with the same car, in MPLS and on his way back to PA. Its a pretty cool story if youre into that sort of thing.

Here are some pictures from last night, along with some of his videos on the car, and the link to his story.

Always thought those Harlequin VWs were cool. Reminds me of a 90s Cosby sweater, hahaha

Hey what's that MX-5 doing at the VW meetup?!

A few pics of my father's VWs. He sold the beetle and bought the bus. He was president of the Roanoke Valley VW club. He resigned last year after he sold the bus. At 81 it got to be to much for him to try to run everything in the club. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170615/e85d6225e1c57edd410896e78a51d9a0.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170615/260ffd238d76b8d7797b6910d01b2297.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170615/55dbb07460959b4b3e35fc4fa2a23f66.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170615/347e47b1a0a7552d16a79d342b851150.jpg

That's pretty cool.. I like the GTI's that you've had... Wouldn't mind one, but am kind of tired of the FWD cars, especially with power behind the tires.. Not sure about the guy standing on the hood of his R32.. I mean it's his car to do with as he pleases... but not what I would do with it... then again looking at the front bumper, not sure he really cares about the car to start with... Wish I had the money to pick up a half way decent classic Bug... and put a Porsche motor in it... that'd be some nice power for a light weight small car... and from the outside would still look completely stock..

I went for a ride with a friend of mine who is a air-cooled VW mechanic. He had a 70 model with a 2000cc motor with a blower on it. WOW what a ride. The thing would pull the wheels in 1st and 2nd with no problem. Haven't seen him in a while but I know he sold the car, without the motor, he said he had other plans for the blower motor. My first car was a 69 beetle, I had a Kadron header, 88mm jugs with a mild cam, Bosch 009 dist. , Bosch red coil. 2bbl single port intake with a 2bbl Holley bug spray carb, F&S 200mm clutch flywheel and pressure plate. It would eat Pintos and Vegas for lunch. Of course this was late 70s. It would hold its own against stock 305 and 307 Nova's and the reason I know this , is a friend of mine in school had a 72 Nova with a 307 and it would piss him off because he couldn't out run me. Lol

Now we're talking! Been in and out of vw's for around 11 years now. Although, admittedly more toward the aircooled side I can definitely appreciate the water cooled ones too. Actually, a few are on my list of "want to own" one day. I have 2 vw's but sadly never have gotten to drive them. Both need major work (but I did get them as awesome deals) to pretty much everything including a good bit of rust. I haven't had the time nor money with the jeep taking most of it. Although I'm thinking of letting them go and picking up one in nicer shape because of the rust and I don't want to dedicate all my spare time for the next two years repairing one of their bodies. I'd rather build an engine, fix up the interior, modify the suspension, etc. One is a '74 standard beetle (and I have suspicions it's a Formula Vee edition because it has the side stripe but not sure if they sold those as a option by themselves) and the other a '72 squareback. The squareback is a really neat little car. A bit bigger than the beetle for fitting me. Nothing like it being a rear engine wagon with the engine being only 12" tall overall to still have a cargo area. Mine has ac too. Really makes me want to fix it up...

But for the last few years I've really come to enjoy a lot of European models, new and old. The history of a lot of the companies, the engeering to meet stricter demands, the styling, etc. Plus I've gotten to see some amazing cars up close recently and in the past few years that are truly works of art. I think I might be obsessed. :D

Like that yellow gti you had. Don't see many in yellow!

When I was a kid, my dad had a 69 fastback. Freaked people out at the grocery store when he would fill up the front trunk then go to the rear and open it and start loading groceries in. They couldn't figure out where the hell the motor was at. Lol

Priceless! That's the kind of unique stuff I like. It's actually amazing how much room is in those little cars.

I had a'71 beetle that I bought the stripes for. They did sell them separately.

VWs are like Jeeps, especially air cooled, once you own one it's hard to get them out of your system. They get to be addictive. Sad part is ones you could buy for $900 now sell for 3 or 4 thousand and need work.
