....holder!

We all know that the designers over at jeep were asleep at the wheel when it comes to cup holders in the XJ, and we have all come up with work-arounds. Like a cup holder screwed to the side of the centre console, or my personal favourite of just buying beverages in resealable bottles and tossing them "somewhere".

Well beverage fans, I decided to do something about it! I have been thinking about this for sometime, and just could not come up with anything worthwhile, until I stopped looking at the centre console, instead I turned my attention to the door handle, or more accurately the space below the stock power window switches.

Mine are from a non power option XJ, because I have moved all my switches inboard to the centre console. Even with my sexy ass left knee in place there is a fair amount of room in this area.

So that's where I decided to try to shoehorn a decent cup holder in, by using the factory mounting for the door handle it would be supported well, and because it's close to the door hinge, your drinks won't fly across the cab when closing the door, and if it spills while traveling it will run onto the floor mat. It is still not an ideal place, but it's kinda the best we can do, and will also work on the passenger side.

It also had to accommodate most beverage containers, with that in mind I modelled a can, mug, typical large coffee cup and 1L pop bottle, and came up with this.

As you can see it's simple and holds practically all beverages, even a bottle of wine for you classy wheelers!

What I think I'm going to do is build a prototype, make sure the design is solid and actually works, then do up detailed plans and post them so anyone can build these. I would love to build a company and sell these to fund all my other projects but really can't see people paying more than $20, and that would basically be what they would cost to ship.

What does the community think? Would you like the plans?

That looks like will be a nice solid design, and will work nicely.. Look forward to seeing the prototype..

surely you can ship for less than $20.

looks like you need 3 sizes of pipe, some flat stock and 10 minutes with a welder.

Never thought of using pipe, I made it out of plate aluminum, hmmm might need a redesign.....
