Hi there and thanks for the warm welcome! I am relatively new to the xj. Got my self a 1995 model in a pretty good condition. Looking to make it look like a real 4x4 and I think I am ready for bigger tires and lift. So I want 31-32 tires on some steel comp rims. What I've been reading online, is that I need a 3" lift kit, so I was going to ask it's the right direction and would 2" be to short to clear tires?

You could probably get by with 2" lift and 31"s, may rub on the lower fender edges if you compress the suspension too much.

Save yourself some time and go with 3-3.5" lift. Most 2" lifts (blocks/add-a-leaf) will wear or your leaf pack will sag and your rear end will be squatting back down to stock level and you will probably want to go bigger anyways.

Three inch lift is the best deal. Be sure to use full spring packs. Add a leaves sag after awhile and you get to do it over

I did 4.5" lift for 32x11.5x15 and they rubbed, so had to do a little trimming. They really rubbed off road flexing. Also I felt I need to redo the gears from 3.55 to at least 4.10. I actually went with 4.56 gears in the diffs.

I'm now on 33's and a 6.5" lift.

^Cautionary tale of how we're never happy without going bigger and better? :D

I have to agree though that a 3" and 31s is a sweet setup for a weekend warrior type rig. Not the MOST capable setup, of course, but a good all around way to make a stock rig much more adventurous while keeping most of the nice road manners we appreciate more when we lose them. And much cheaper than going higher. Past 3" you're dealing with brake lines, driveline angles, possible steering mods, and more as you go higher and higher of course. I'm currently at about 5" with 33s, but I ran 31s on it for years with the same lift. I still had to trim a fair bit so you may need to as well. Especially if your bumpstops are trashed or you have a wide offset wheel (but stock wheels will have to tire rubbing the control arm at full lock too) Aftermarket lower control arms can make a difference too by giving more room to droop on the back of the shock mount.

3.5" is right on the line where you can get away with just your upgraded suspension and not much else (unless you want to of course.) I went with the R.C. X series 3.5" and it's suited me well so far. About to add 31x10.5x15. you may or may not need s new track bar, I did. Google 3.5" lift with 31s you'll be surprised how good it looks.

Thanks everyone! Great to receive the feedback that was based on a real experience. Looking at 3"-3.5" lift for sure. Hope that black friday/ cyber monday deals will make it more affordable for me. Cheers!

Interesting option, does that include shocks?

I was looking at this Tuff country lift kit with new SX6000 shocks https://www.carid.com/1995-jeep-cherokee-suspension-systems/tuff-country-ez-ride-lift-kit-239876219.html It looks like pretty solid option. One of my buddies over here is rocking a similar Tuff country lift kit on his Sierra.

Yes, it comes with front and rear shocks. I've never looked in to tuff country, check Google for reviews
