View Full Version : Mind-numbing Crank/No spark issue...

Ok guys, I have a huge ask:

I've done the research across multiple forums, YouTube, etc...
I've read the manuals.
I've replaced EVERY part EXCEPT the Stator/Pickup Coil/Camshaft Position Sensor.
I've checked all the fuses.
I've metered all connections and have 5V feed to all sensors, even the stator.

I've tested the CSP and it tests good.

All grounds are good.

I'm not getting any voltage to the supply side of the coil.

Is it likely that the stator, being the only thing that isn't new through the entirety of the ignition system, is bad and keeping me from getting spark or voltage to the coil?

Is it possible that the ASD is bad?

I've ground to a halt.

I appreciate any and all information that you guys can provide.

Have you checked the ASD relay?

I've searched high and low for the best way to test the ASD and have either overlooked it, failed to understand how, or not found a way to do it.

I'm open to being educated.

Swap in a known good relay, like say the AC relay

LOL!!! That's too simple for me to comprehend!
Seriously, I totally went waaay too technical. I'll go turn on the drop light and get to it, as soon as I make some "mac and the cheese" for my little nugget.

Year ago I had started friends 4.0 ZJ. It has no spark at all and was a bad cam pos. sensor. If you have a chance, replace distributor with known good one

Thanks, Od! That's the ONLY item that I haven't replaced new, on this entire build. If I'm gonna pick up a new one, I might as well splurge on the $10 for a new ASD.

Just
Empty

Steve!!! You're a god!!! On my way to AutoZone to pick up a new ASD!!!
Put in the fan relay and got a beautiful blue spark!!! Looks like we're doing the 30 min/2000 RPM break in, tonight!! I can't resist!!!

Good luck on that. It is always great to hear that first pop, then purrr

Well... I got the pop, but no purr, and a permanent CEL. 0.0
After an enormous backfire and fancy flames in the throttle body... nothing.
Tomorrow's another day.

Your right, tomorrow. But you are getting closer

I'm curious about what would cause the CEL. It would cycle through and go out after the ignition was switched on earlier, but now it stays on.

Any ideas?

Are you sure you are timed correctly? Of course, nothing like pulling the code to see what it says

I was pretty meticulous in making sure that I was timed correctly: TDC/Dampener @ 0/Rotor @ 5/Plug wires correctly cylindered. Checked several times, after I discovered that the timing was retarded by one gear tooth (27ish degrees). I don't have the luxury of pulling the code, at the moment, and honestly, I'm not interested in purchasing a code reader. But I may have to if the CEL is part of a problem that won't allow me to fire it up.

I'm out to do the turn-key code checks now.

Turned the key (3) times quickly to initiate the procedure and the CEL didn't come back on and no codes flashed.

That's a win, in my opinion. :D

... Reposted CEL issue and it finally showed up in the thread.

You guys wouldn't believe the amount of rust under this Jeep...

Anywho, I broke the vapor recovery line coming from the fuel tank to the collector while prepping to pull the tank. I'm probably just going to fab one from 1/4 rubber hose, as I'm not interested in paying $36+ for a vent line.

Anyone have any experience with this item/issue?

Vacuum hose will work
