So im finally getting around to fixing my exhaust. The previous owner gutted the cat, and welded a muffler on (backwards, none the less), now the cat rattles really bad, the exhaust hangs down super low, and its loud.

I got a new (used) cat and muffler (no tailpipe), that i want to get hung up. So i was thinking i will cut the old one out right in front of the cat, and just use a clamp for the time being to hold the new one on.

My question is this, i will need a hanger at the end of my muffler so that its not just dangling there like it is now. I wanted to use a "universal" hanger and just bend the hanger 90*, and screw it under the floor (you wouldnt care either, if you owned my jeep lol).

Does anyone else have any ideas other than screwing it into my floor, or sourcing a tailpipe and hanging it properly? I dont think there is much in that area to bolt a hanger to....

My exhaust currently:

This is the type of hanger i was going to use:

The stock one is more substantial if you can find one. It has a bracket that bolts to the nut strip inside the frame

all my jeeps are modified like the pictures on this site under cpttuna mods. The hanger behind my muffler is located near the top of the rear shock(just slightly forward of it and towards the center of the vehicle. Looks like some thicker metal there where a bracket can be bolted. The hanger I Have looks OEM.

I found your picture, but i cant see how the exhaust is hung on the back side of the muffler...... What type of hanger did you use?

Ill just have to see if i have enough hanger to reach that area when i get home. Hopefully i can make it work. Id like to get this tackled tonight.

Look in the area where the top of the rear shock is. This is where my hanger is bolted. The rubber part of my hanger is elongated and twice as thick as yours.

I may be too late. And this pic may be of no use. But the mount you see, is in front of the p/s shock, just near the bend out of the muffler.

I got it hung up last night, and it looks great and its nice and quiet.

I did find that my rear o2 sensor has not been hooked up for who knows how long, and between that and the old gutted CAT, may be causing my CEL. The wires on the o2 sensor on the new exhaust had different colored wires (my old o2 was seized in), so i dug this up, and hooked it in this way:

And here is how the exhaust looks now. Much improvement!

My hanger is a little janky, but its definitely not going anywhere.

2 things....

1. you can get a 2.5" tail pipe fitted for like $50 buck from RockAuto (look at the '89 XJ high performance Walker 441781). It's already formed and has the hanger... good stuff for cheap.

2. I was driving from Portland to K-Falls (like 300+ mile trip) and I stopped for gas. The attendant (can't pump your own in OR) started to open the cap... and back pressure was soooooo great that it took like 10 minutes before the pressure stopped blowing. And it started bubbling over when I got back on the road.
**** reason = without that tailpipe, you're blowing like 1700* exhaust directly on your gas tank.

:smiley-scared003: just saying...

...OK 3 things.
I also found that the 96+ front pipe is larger than the 91-95/96 (just need to plug the 2 O2 sensor spot) Walker 55277 for $46'ish + shipping
...off the exhaust header

Then a straight pipe or high flow cat, or glass packs or ....

and into the tail pipe and you've just upgraded your exhaust for like $100 +/- a 6 pack and a Sat afternoon.

So all the pieces arrived... but I think they sent the wrong lead pipe (between cat and exhaust man)
They're going to bring in another so I can compare them.

The Glass pack is 2.5" in/out 4" center ($30)
and I grabbed a 2.5" straight pipe for ($6)
I have a pipe stretcher already... but you can rent for free from parts store.
I'll fit the ends pretty close. Then I'll grab some exhaust joint sealer ($5) and reuse a few clamps ($3 each) or a wrap style clamp ($5)

$100 - $125 total
