I used the removal tool on this transmission adapter, and it didn't work. Now I believe I just have to squeeze the plastic tab together and pull. Is this correct. It is leaking now. Should I remove and replace the whole adapter?

IC ..... more or less. cut the hose plug it up,hose clamp. So its would be okay to just remove old one and replace with another too, since i have to get either one. i have new hose already. Oh and Thanks.

Yep ... squeeze & pull.
Some XJs even had squeeze connectors at the radiator.
Your adapter is probably fine ... it will be the o-rings causing an issue.
Something a little more robust such as what cantab27 used ... is worthwhile.
