You looking for a specific wire in particular.

There should be 4 plugs, 2 for speakers, 1 for wiper motor, and 1 for license plate light.

Speaker wires should be spread out on towards where the speakers would mount.
The license place light should be connected but would be in the middle. The wiper motor plug would be in the middle too and either connected or not depending on if you have this option.

Maybe a picture if you can.?

Power lock and rear window defrost on the lift gate as well would have a plug..

Ok... I went and bummed wifi to see the pic.
What did you take them all apart for? :D
Luckily it looks like a couple only have one mate, except maybe the grey ones.
If nothing else I will open up the hatch in my 93 tomorrow (if I remember) and trace the wires.

There should be one with a relay plug. That is for the wiper. Also a hose for the wiper washer.

I just snaked the harness up through the hatch - Left group of wires.

The most obvious issue I see is that there are more wires/connectors from the chassis harness then are in the hatch.

I'm having a problem finding an obvious connector-type to connector-type.

Still hoping for a color-coded wiring diagram...

Does your wiring harness match the year of the Jeep?

I'm just reconnecting the existing OEM.

So I take it you are wanting to equip it with every option?

Every option/functions in/of/on the lift-gate! :D

What I know of:

1) Defogger (2-wires - black heavy-gauge)
2) Wiper/motor
3) Speakers (4-wires)
4) License-plate lamp
5) Power-lock release?

Sorry folks... I really didn't want to make such a big-deal of this. Just wanted a color-coded wiring schematic... Who knew it would be so difficult to find!:smiley-scared003:

I have an 86 Laredo. On my tailgate I have auto locks, rear dome light switch, license plate light, two sets of speaker wires, three wiper motor wires that go to a relay, rear defogger, and one washer hose

I don't have a '87 Manual, but do have a '89. The problem with your request for wiring diagrams is that each individual system would have it's own diagram. As a result, the Rear Window Defroster is one diagram, the Speakers are on another diagram, and so on. So it quickly becomes a lot of diagrams. Look at AutoZone, and see if they may have what you are looking for : http://www.autozone.com/repairinfo/repairguide/repairGuideContent.jsp?pageId=0900c152800a9de9

If not, you might be able to buy the diagrams that you need. Some businesses sell used manuals. Others deal in PDF downloads, but I have never used the download sights.

I have most of the connections completed, tested, and working... Except these:

what still does not work?

Great question! First... It appears all the wires from the wiring-harness are now connected.

Everything works... Although I can't test the latch lock/un-lock as the overhead receiver is disconnected. Observation is that the wires from the latch are a smaller gauge than the three wires shown.

These three wires/connectors come from the hatch-harness and return into the hatch harness. As you can see there are not the typical connector type. They are the same in appearance to the defogger connectors... But a tad smaller in diameter.

Help any?

Sorry for late response, we have 2 license plate lamps, probably 1 of them disconnected.

All are connected/working except these pesky two:
http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/r620/TheClassicCove/IMG_6966_zpspx7l3t6e.jpg

1) The two-blue are hot when parking-lights on.
2) The black can be used as a ground to the blue(s).
3) I can't activate the on/off latch. I understand the driver's door lock-up/down controls the hatch-latch?

Will the latch activate with the hatch is open?

I read earlier in this thread there are specific diagrams for the lift-gate electric latch. Unfortunately I couldn't find it at Autozone or Google-search. Help?

Blue should go to your license plate light. Yes, you can activate the hatch lock with door lock switch in any position. Black is usually always a ground on an XJ
