Transfer case is bad in the 98 classic! What transfer case should I put in? Original was a 242j

Same one for a bolt in. There are better cases if you wanna spend

You can put in an NP 242 or 231, both are bolt ins. If you go with the 231, get the shifter for the console too for it. It all really boils down to whether you think you need the full time 4X4 option

If I recall correctly, there can be a spline count issue. Don't recall details, but remember that it may not be a direct replacement.

Yeah I don't remember the year the splines changed but if you get a NP232 or NP242 for a 98 you'll be fine. The NP232 has some aftermarket support to make it stronger, wider chain for example.

Personally I like the NP242 since mind is a daily driver.
