View Full Version : Transmission oil cooler

SO in order to not void my warranty on my remanufactured transmission I want to put a new oil cooler in my jeep and bypass the radiator oil cooler all together. It brings a couple questions to mind. One, once I disconnect the transmission lines from the radiator and drain the fluid out of it, can I just plug those two holes and only use the radiator for engine coolant? 2, has anyone fit an aftermarket cooler in front of their radiator? Seems like the fan is in the way to go between radiator and fan. If you did do this, how did you route the oil cooler lines and what material did you use for the line?

Thanks for any and all input!!!!!! You guys are always super helpful!

Answer to the first question is yes. I have a different tranny, but I used oil line with a braided steel jacket on it. That way it won't get any holes in it from rubbing on something

I installed a b&m 70268 and it fit perfectly in front of the radiator/condenser, and behind the center support in the header panel. Most people put it in front of the mechanical fan to get the most cooling for the trans but I put it in the center to get some but not affect engine cooling as much. I'm not sure what hoses I used as they came in the kit but on this one they come out the top (in the way I have it mounted) so I routed them to the drivers side in front of the top off the radiator and they poke through to the engine compartment in a small gap between the radiator and headlight bucket part of the header. I did run it in-line with the radiator cooler though so your routing could be different.

You dont even have to plug the holes ... the heat exchanger is a sealed unit.

Mounted mine in front of the radiator, and in front of the clutchfan for constant airflow.

... Mines a RHD.

Most say to have the hoses at the top or sides ... I've had no issues in 4yrs, with them being in the "wrong" position.

Braided lines are good if you can get them ... I just used auto tranny, rubber lines, available in lengths of your choice off a roll, from a parts store.

Make sure you dont have the lines stretched tight after fitting ... they need a bit of slack - to allow for drivetrain vibration/movement.

Slap a bit of corro conduit or something, around them, at any wear/rub points.

I am thinking of using the hayden 678 heavy duty plate and fin cooler. I figure the heavy duty one is better since i will be bypassing the radiator. Seems like it was like 9.5 by like 15.5 so i hope it fits!!

Make sure you add double hose clamps. I ruined the trans on my 89 Fleetwood cause i didnt. If i wasnt on this frustrating to use tablet i would provide the writeup i did on this site on a b&m trans cooler. I put it on the side of the ac fan on the front of the radiator. Im 3-4 years in and no problems yet. I will only run an external trans cooler cause of my friends 05 Xterra. The cooler in the radiator failed and filled the trans with coolant.

I did not realize i could just use hose clamps on it.

Yeah. I want to say the kit from B&M came with 4 hose clamps. I added 4 more (2per connection) and you will need to add more trans fluid when done cause some will escape when the system is open and a small amount is needed to fill that cooler. Make sure you put in the right one. Some take Dexron some take ATF4.

I wonder if this guy had the same issue as mine with the kinked/crushed hard lines in that spot.........

Not quite ... I was fitting a new cooler.

... but they were crushed a bit - not flat like yours tho.

Keep an eye on your new lines/make sure your bump stops are "useful",
... you might be surprised at just how many places your upper control arms can reach ... with some flexing.
