I used to love mountain biking. I have a single track less than 2 miles from my house, and 2 neighbor guys that go all the time.

I have this thing in my basement. It literally has 8 miles on it and looks brand new, other than the elastomers that melted and fell off lol. I have always dreamt of putting new suspension on it and making it like the one in the bottom picture, and then taking it out and getting less-fat.

After debating this for a while now, the time has come for me to drop about 100lbs. I decided on a new bike rather than fixing up the old ProFlex. I think that will be a good way for me to have fun, and drop a bunch of weight that i gained after quitting smoking, and more that i gained when my wife was pregnant with our 1st child (all within a 2 year span).

I decided to go with the Trek Marlin 7. I went this route due to the frame being stout, and the double walled rims that will stand up to my weight better. The last thing i wanted to do was get a bike that was less expensive, and have it collapse under me lol. Im going to go get fitted for it tonight, and get one on order

Im thinking the Green one.

I also picked this up so i can tote the little man around once hes old enough to hold himself up:

I need to get back into mountain biking again... for the 3rd time.

I have a 2013 Marin Pioneer Trail hardtail. Been too busy working 7 days a week for the last 15 months to ride but hopefully soon I can at least get out 1 or 2 days a week.

Can you get that with caliper brakes? Disk brakes on a bike are a pain to maintain. If your riding on the road a lot, you won't need the rear suspension. Bikes are great for cardio, and your wife will love the new butt you get after you've been riding awhile. I have a trek hybred 7200, it's about 8yrs old. It's a little heavy but I'm not racing. Learn to use your gears just like driving, you don't want to start out in 15th gear. Learn to love the hills and rain is only water. Don't waste a lot of money on spandex, just wear loose and comfortable clothes. Start with short trips and carry water.
I really hope you enjoy your new bike, and I wish you many happy miles.

cool hardtail. Had a Trek Marlin that got lifted out of my garage. Went full suspension when I replaced it and honestly miss the hardtail. Rolling a Trek Superfly on 29".

WAS95X - talk to me about disc vs caliper? Discs will stop like no other. Both his and hers have discs. Haven't done much maintenance but couldn't imagine going back to caliper style brakes.

I haven't had a bike with disks but have known a lot of people that have. The problems I see are the rotors can be too thin, some of the mounts are janky, hard to get lined up properly and most of the pads wear out too quick.
I have the front brake on my big bike set where you have to pull hard to lock it up. I learned the hard way. I was riding up broadway a few years ago and a guy opens his car door in front of me. I grabbed my brakes just short of hitting his door, my wheels locked up and I did a face plant right at his feet. Rang my bell real good, I think my brain is still re-wiring itself. I have V brakes on that bike.
I know a few people that like their disks, but they spent a lot of money on them.

Here's my 1st ZB bike,http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm37/herein97217xj/120_zpsoh68du0y.jpg (http://s292.photobucket.com/user/herein97217xj/media/120_zpsoh68du0y.jpg.html)

A few other bikes I fixed up,http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm37/herein97217xj/075_zpsroodu3s7.jpg (http://s292.photobucket.com/user/herein97217xj/media/075_zpsroodu3s7.jpg.html)http://http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm37/herein97217xj/123_zpsnfsvbcyp.jpg (http://s292.photobucket.com/user/herein97217xj/media/123_zpsnfsvbcyp.jpg.html) http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm37/herein97217xj/129_zpsdvxfqq2l.jpg (http://s292.photobucket.com/user/herein97217xj/media/129_zpsdvxfqq2l.jpg.html)

This is what I ride now for ZB it took some work, it's 6 spd with 20 in wheels. The other bikes have 16 in wheels, it's more fun that way. The 20 has a banana seat now, Schwalbe marathon tires, adjustable neck. It's a solid downhill speed bike.:D

Have to admit, you got a bit of an eyebrow raise out of me when I saw this... Seemed kind of like telling someone to go buy a new car and ask them to put drum brakes all the way around..lol.

I can kind of see your point now that I've read the other comments, and a lot of it is going to come down to what you are getting for components on your bike and what kind of riding you want to do.. You will be pretty hard pressed to find a decent mountain bike now though that doesn't come stock with disc brakes, it's the way the industry has gone. The biggest thing to watch for is if they are cable pull disc brakes (cheaper, more prone to cable stretching and brake fade with use) or hydraulics (generally more expensive, more consistent) The biggest issue I've ever had with my hydraulic discs were that sometimes I would get an air bubble in the system, usually after sitting all winter, and you need a special bleed kit, or bike shop to get it out...

If you are going to be biking anywhere that has a bunch of hills, where you are going to be going up then down, then up, then down again....rinse, lather, repeat.... I strongly recommend buying a bike that has a dropper seat post..I wish I had bought one when I finally made the jump to full suspension a few years ago, because the price to buy one separately is ridiculous...

I was thinking of road bikes when I mentioned calipers, I actually prefer v-brakes. My 16 in. trek had a front caliper and a v on the rear. They worked good together. A few years ago we had someone lace a disk on a 16 in. wheelset, put them on a twenty in. frame. The brakes worked good but he wasn't very fast. We have a yearly challenge to ride up the hill, but we're lucky, we can take an elevator :)

Ch1n00k

Another thing I would recommend is ride before you buy, there has been a lot of 'controversy' in the last few years with tire sizes on bikes.. The original MTB tire was 26" and had been for years, then someone decided that a 29" wheel has less rolling resistance which gives you more speed for less effort (there is more to it than that, but that's the Cole's notes version) then someone decided that 29" is to big and tall and a bit awkward at lower speeds, so they came out with the 650b or 27.5". Make sure you ride it and find which one fits you best, I had a buddy who bought a 29" bike after riding it around the parking lot. Once he got it out on the trails though, he found out, he didn't really like it...now he's stuck with it until he can afford to sell it and get a new one.

Elevators, making hills better for bikers since 1853...lol

I'm pretty much a pavement pounder, but I still like riding down hill! I've seen some of the new fat tire bikes, and the people on them are pushing hard on the pedals because the tires are so heavy. I hear you about the test ride, some people get bikes with gears too low, small front rings. Makes getting groceries a chore.

Well, the dust collecting is going as well as the rust collecting right now...it's got 365000 kms on it..and still worked, until the fuel pump and battery died last year...i finally ripped the interior out last summer, because the mice and chipmunks were having a hay day with it...I just need to find the time to get in there and start working on it, but that means doing less things like biking...

I ruptured some discs around 82, had them removed around 92. I hurt like hell all the time but I don't let it stop me. Bone on bone, it slows me down a bit, but it doesn't me stop from trying to enjoy life.
This isn't one of mine, but it sure looks fun!

Tell them to try it out, they can pick up a janky bike at the pyle or bring there own. Small bikes encouraged, but all bikes welcome. Full face helmet advised. I wish my body wasn't so trashed, I'd like to be still riding my old 16 in.
I had to go out and take a picture of what I'm riding now. The picture above with the mountain in the backround is of Mt. Hood. Once a year everyone goes up there for the weekend to bomb down that hill. Over the years, we've had a few people air lifted off the mountain for bad crashes into guardrails ect. It's fun but you have to know your limitations as well as your bikes limitations.
Had to add this, If you think wobbles are bad in a jeep, wait until you see it happen to someone riding next to you on a bike. It usually ends up with a broken collar bone, happened next to me twice. Once going down burnside at about 45mph, another time in the tunnel on hellway (freeway, we ride the shoulder if there's traffic).

Great choice on the bike, if you got all of the upgrades you won't even know your shifting gears. The computer will keep you peddling, helps you maintain speed at the same time it drives you crazy, 1st 100 miles,,,then 500,,, then you push for 1,000 and so it goes. Happy trails!

Oh my phone is always on me for the most part, i cant ride without music (especially on a leisurely cruise by myself).

I mostly got that computer so that i can keep track of mileage on the trainer or on the rollers in the basement when its too crappy to go ride outside. Plus, i love technology. Am i going to use all of the features? Probably not... But the inner nerd in me thinks that its cool and that i need it :rolleye0012:

the computer is now a need for me as well. Cumulative miles was a PITA to track on the old system. although it did show calories burned across a multitude of activities so I really like that feature. I'm more likely to workout day 1, bike day 2, run day 3 and repeat that sequence than I am to bike 3 days in a row. Maybe I don't need it

You guys and your bicycles... Back when I was a kid I mowed lawns saved up my money and bought a Schwinn English racer. $110. Tires were thin for low drag and held 80 psi. Unofficially I could do 30 mph on it. I rode bikes all the time up to 16 when I started driving.

http://www.bikegallery.com/product/bell-faction-178926-1.htm
Giro, Nutcase and a few others make a similar helmet.
The pointy aero helmets will last for that 1st impact, won't be much left if you take a second bounce. The pointed ends are going to turn your head one way or the other on impact. Not a good thing for your neck. I wear the Bell faction, have some friends that wear Nutcase, some don't bother to wear one at all. If your in the dirt and ride hard, I'd recommend a fullface. I was wearing a faction my last face plant. I had a concussion, but I didn't split my forehead. It would have been worse if I had an aero helmet. If you fall over and slap the side of your head on the pavement wearing an aero helmet, you'll need to get a new one. They're light and full of holes, if your not riding the Tour De France a few 10ths of a second aren't going to matter.

There's a reason we wear fullface motorcycle helmets when we ride our little bikes.

Sweet! What kind of pedals are you getting? If you don't live too far from the bike shop have someone drop you off and ride it home. Helmet? If you don't have one already get one that looks like a helmet. The aerodynamic ones don't hold up well in a crash. Enjoy!

I'm on clipless. took a few falls to get used to!! :rolleye0012:

I ride in the dirt and try to push myself. I was a no helmet dude until a year ago when a buddy cracked a helmet going head first into a tree. I liked that one cause it looked like it would stay cooler than a full helmet like you linked. For $20 I'm kinda dumb for not getting a better one. Thanks for the link

Your welcome! I've seen a lot of head trauma over the past few years, including my own. We still have a few that refuse to wear one.

I wish that were me, just the top picture is me learning about 5 yrs ago. Billy Bones challenged us to ride down our hill on a longboard like he does. I got to where I could skate down Mt. Tabor, but our hill is steeper in places and the run is about 3-1/2 miles. My knees won't bend the way I need them to to be able to drift and control my speed. I had to give it up before I hurt myself or someone else. I was riding Landyatze until I changed the grip on my switchblade, they don't seal that side of the deck. I had 2 switchblades that warped. Subsonics are made here in Portland and they make a great deck.

At least it's ready when you are. :)
If it's real icy out, you can take some old tires and screw some sheet metal screws through them (make sure the heads are inside the tire). Try to space them evenly, and put a tire liner in between the tube and screws. Check your clearance and grind off what you don't need. There's also some tire chains out there.

Trying to kill yourself? What gear are you using? It looks like your big ring has about 48 teeth middle ring about 36. Am I close? Anyway try using your front big ring and your back big ring, should make peddling easier for you. Try watching tv while you peddle instead of your speedometer, you might go farther. Good effort so far, don't stop now.

So far so good... I'm slowly but surely upping my mileage, but nowhere near the triple digits yet lol. I finally picked up a helmet too, because I'm at the age where safety trumps the cool factor lol.

Here's my most recent. I made it all the way to the single track, and then I turned around and went home. It's one of the more difficult ones in the area, and I'm not ready for that, especially at night, by myself hahaha. Anyone else here on Strava?

Well im trying to get back into a rhythm. I have the bike on the trainer again sitting in my basement, and i put just over 3 miles on last night. I am shooting for 3 miles every other day, until i build up to more.

We are going to Cuyuna in September for a bachelor party. And although ive lost some weight, i will still not be able to really do any of the trails up there. My goal is to drop 50#s by then, and im hoping riding lots can help me with that.

Heres the link to Cuyuna, it looks pretty awesome, and is supposed to be a great place to ride. I just need to get my ass in gear so i can enjoy it!

that place looks fun! how many miles of trails? I'm guessing its under 5' of snow right now? riding in the snow would be fun for a minute, would get messy for sure.

dude you're dropping some serious weight! keep on it! I've moved my bike around the garage more times than I rode in 2016. Working on changing that for 2017.

Its definetely under alot of snow right now. Its over 25 miles on 800 acres, so its a decent size park for sure.

I know you guys wont judge, but i was at one point close to 360lbs. That was rough, i quit smoking, had a pregnant wife, excuses excuses....... I am still over 300, but im closer to 300 than i am to 360 lol. My goal for now is 285. I think that is manageable. I have the tools to do it, i just need to take the steps to get there.

wanted to ask where you started, but your progress is really all that's important. Not that what some dude from Texas says on the internet matters, but: GREAT JOB. Now get back on it!!

So the neighbor and i heard an animal screaming back in the woods last night, so we took the truck back to investigate. We didnt hear it anymore once we got back there, but i got to thinking..........

This would be a pretty sweet place to start riding, since its got some good terrain and elevation change, and its in my back yard lol. I might have to try to beat down a trail back there and start using it as a beginner single track for myself. It will sure beat the trainer in the basement, and i can bring the dog out there to chase me and not have to worry about him running in peoples yards.

Looks like it'd make a pretty nice single track... what's beyond the river brook there??? If nothing but more woods, maybe you could make a make shift double board wide bridge across and continue the track a bit, once you get to that point..

There are eventually houses on the other side. The land owner of the property behind my house lets me use it for whatever, but the guy that owns the property on the other side of the creek is kind of a douche.

Eh... go figure... But you still got plenty to be able to setup a pretty decent track or two there either way...

Well Friday the guys and I are heading up to Cuyuna for a weekend long Bachelor Party/mountain biking adventure.

A little info from the website:
Located in the heart of Minnesota, the Cuyuna Lakes Mountain Bike Trails are 28 miles of Red Gold that twist their way thru the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area, the towns of Crosby, Ironton, Cuyuna and Rivertown. Over 30 purpose-built trails to choose from, everyone from beginner to pro can enjoy the breath-taking rides and overlooks.

The Cuyuna Lakes Mountain Bike Trails are a Silver Level Ride Center, one of only 11 in world.. The Ride Center is a designation given by the International Mountain Biking Association, based on an evaluation of the trails and surrounding infrastructure.

We rented 3 camper cabins right on the lake that were recently built, and have AC, heat, electricity, and 4 beds. They are on the trails, so you can ride in and out right from the cabin. It should be a good time provided that i dont die......... I have not ridden in like a year, and it was about 14 years since i rode before then. Luckily there are plenty of bars close by, and a hospital across town just in case lol.

Here are a few pictures. And yes, that is an Xj in the picture i believe. It makes me want to drive mine up there, but its 2.5 hours each way, so that has me worried lol. I may just take my car or the truck.....

That reminds me. I should probably get my bike dug out of our literal garage full of stuff from moving, and find my shoes and helmet. Im going to need to ride a little every night this week just to get the hang of it again lol. Hopefully i can work that in with working all day, and renovating the new house at night after work.....

Well we went to Cuyuna over the weekend, what a blast!! We put on about 17.6 miles of trails, and visited a brewery, and stayed up way too late for this old man lol.

I am super out of shape, but i would like to do it more, it was great!

Other than a small casualty with the truck, and my bike taking a beating and needing some adjustments and a new chain, it was a great time.

I need to start hitting up some of the trails we have "nearby".. I know I'm super out of shape.. but feel in far better shape then I used to be earlier this year.. and have been waiting to get more into biking again... My not a whole lot better than a Huffy will have to work for now.. until I can get some income coming back in again.. then I'll continue looking for a deal on a decent worth a crap bike... at least the one I have is quite a bit lighter than a Huffy.. and a bit better... (a very small bit..lol)
