View Full Version : Who Knows Water Tanks???

Gday peoples.

A couple of years ago, I purchased a second hand Camper Trailer. A home made jobie. Got it dirt cheap. The trailer alone was worth the dollars, so the camper tent was just a bonus.

Anyhoo, to my dilemma.
It came with a 60/70 litre water tank. The bloke I bought it from, said he never used it, mainly because the pump never worked.

I removed all that and drained any remaining water, but, for the past year or more, have never gone any further with it.

QUESTION:
How can I be sure it is safe to use for palatable/safe drinking water?

It is a purpose made black poly tank.
As far as I know, it's only ever had water in it. But I can't tell if anything nasty has grown in it. There is no odour emanating from the inlet or outlet.

I'd like to fit a hand pump/tap from a caravan to the trailer and start using the tank for drinking and cleaning water.

cheers

I would say ditch the unknown past tank, and pickup a proper potable water tank for a camper, which is usually a transparent white tank.. that way you could see if there is any kind of mold or anything that has managed to start growing inside it..

Kiwis ... sighhhh ... and they wonder why we hate 'em.

:p

:D

.... but ... as long as its full of rum ... I'm game for a taste test .. :D

Dunno how good it is but BCF carries a cleaner.

I ripped the one out of mine too, didnt trust it ... have been meaning to get a newy - but I prefer jerrycans as they are a lot easier to take down the creek and fill - than what the camper is .. ;);)

Then, there is always this option - if you want a proper water tank .. :p

Thanks guys.

With 60 or so litres of rum on board, I reckon I'd have to rename it the Black Pearl, hit the road and only be seen when boarding another camper to rape and pillage. ARRRR!!!

Might follow Carves lead, and toss it. Not worth the trouble, by the sounds.
And I've towed a trailer with a bloody 700 gallon gal tank 200km. What a trip. :stars:

Now, to break the news the lovely wife......

In this country, you are nor allowed to use plank poly for drinking. You need to use pvc or cpvc if you are using hot water. But I'd you are using rum, glass only. Seems to be able to make black plastic soft. Ya wouldn,t want to have happy roos

Jerry Can's are kind of the same route I was thinking.. Was talking to a guy he uses Jerry cans as well as a few brand new blue, MX style racing fuel cans, with tap attachments on them.. Think this would work better and easier for cleaning, as well as filing them...

You're going to post up all these questions about it and not even going to give us a tiny little peak at your trailer? Come on!

Ditch the old tank it's not worth the risk. Even if you do clean it out with bleach.
Put a smarter tank in and get a few jerry cans.

Hey man, I was browsing my pics and came across the quickies I shot, of the camper, after reading your post.
But I forget, if I posted 'em elsewhere.
Anyway, I also found a couple of it erected.

That's way nicer than I was imagining! If I had a trailer that nice, I'd be showing it off to everybody. :D

Not a bad setup I like it. How many does it sleep?

bruggz351
03-10-2016, 11:06 PM
It can sleep 4 comfortably.
There's a queen size mattress on the trailer, and a single can fit easy, either side of the entrance.

Since buying it, we've cleaned it up, got rid of most the mold. Removed a bodgy fridge frame and lpg cylinder frames from the 'A' frame.
The trailer is very solid. 7 x 4. I'll probably make the sides a little higher.
I'm changing the hubs over to Ford, so I can run my spare xj rims.
I'll remove the water tank, and a funky little wire cage under the front. Dunno what that was used for?
Putting some 100 mm drain pipe on the draw bar for pole storage and a tool box in front of that for gas (lpg) and tarps and shite. With everything else stowed in the box, it should tow OK. Oh, spare tyre will be there too, somewhere.

How long this process will take, is anyone's guess. 😁😁
I don't rush things. 😎

I've been toying around with the idea to get a small pop up camper to tow behind the car hauler. When I go wheelin it's always out of town and I stay in a motel. The rest of the group have trailers with campers on them or sleep in a tent on the ground. I don't do the tent thing on the ground any more so I thought this would be a nice option.

Saw this on craigslist the other day. Looks like yours Bruggz

$600 for that tent... that looks like a deal. Nice little tent too... I would probably have to get the screened porch and probably the canvas sides for it too.
Unfortunately it has to be about 26" off the ground which does not make it very useful for an expedition type trailer.

That thing is awesome!!! Its like a small, portable house!

This is ours, we usually take it up to the boundary waters (MN/Canadian Border). I just need to make the XJ reliable enough to pull it up there without having to worry about it the whole trip  Especially when there are old logging trails everywhere and no cell phone service if anything were to go wrong.

I used to pull it with our old WK, now its either the F-150 or the Xj to pull it.

Looks like a handy unit Bruggzy.

Changing hubs to get XJ wheels on it is a good move.

Lots of that style down here too ... good units.

I believe the price on their webpage includes their 1 wheeled "trailer". On the craigslist ad the offer was $600 sans trailer.

That's still not too bad a deal... Was thinking about picking up a HF trailer anyways for hauling small objects like lawnmower, quads, etc.. so might as well make it a multipurpose trailer!! LOL Right now I have a standard PopUp, and am not sure if I would really trust the reliability of the XJ right now to haul it, so something smaller, and even more so that would fit behind the XJ, not stick way out.. would be perfect!!

Putting it on a trailer with more ground clearance should be no problem. Just modify the jacks to work with the taller trailer.

I think the problem comes with the part of the tent that comes off the side and sits on the ground... if the tent is on a trailer that sits 10" higher than recommended what do I do about the 10" under the part of the tent that is supposed to sit on the ground? I suppose I could carry some cinder blocks, 2x4s and plywood sheets but that seems overly bulky for an added 10" mounting height.
