XJ cylinder head question

So i have an 01 xj and just found out my head was cracked like i thought i saw it wen i pulled the valve cover its between 3rd n 4th cylinder i cant afford a new 400 head right now and i need the jeep to get back n forth to my auto tech school so i was looking at local salvage yards for a head i found one and they wanted 200 for it which i thought was ridiculous so im gonna call around but i was wondering what head is compatible like could i get a late 80s through 90s head and mount it to my engine is ther any difference besides the mount holes for the coil rail and would a head from a 4.0 grand cherokee be the same and work i could really use some advice and its very appreciated thanks

Yes, the 4.0 head on a ZJ will work. You should be fine with any 4.0 head from a 96 and up. There are some minor differences in ports etc, but they will interchange

Don't go back with an 0331 head. They are prone to cracking. I'm not saying it's 100% chance, just better to go with another casting if you can. I think the 95 head was the highest flowing heads for the 4.0l

Yeah no i deff dont want another 0331 head i wanted to get a head off like an early 90s cherokee but i wanted to make sure it will just bolt right on i assumed there isnt anything different and arent the 4.0 engines in the grand cherokees the same Also so i mean wont any 4.0 head bolt right on ill just have to fab something up to hold my coil rail if its off an older distributor jeep

O ok i jus saw 4.3lxj post now im trying to see what i can find but even earlier then 96 works too right i always just assumed thos engines were basically the same thing from late 80s all the way up idk wen did they stop making that engine i know my 01 was last xj year but they kept using that engine till what like 04 or something right?

The 0331 head castings from '99-'01 were the most crack-prone and they're the ones to avoid. From sometime in '02 onwards, the 0331 heads were cast by a Brazilian company called TUPY and were of much better quality, so if you find a head with TUPY stamped on the topside, grab it. Any TUPY head from an '02-'04 WJ or '02-'06 TJ will do.

Any cylinder head from 91-95 (7120 casting) or 96-99 (0630 casting) will work. The earlier 87-90 (2868 Renix casting) can be made to work but really isn't worth the effort ... BUT ... you will need the earlier style exhaust manifold as well. And have to mate it to the stock exhaust so grab the down pipe to where it crosses under the trans as well.
If you have Cali emissions you have to find a TUPY head or start swapping ECM's to allow use of the earlier hard and manifold.
Hang the coil rail off the valve cover using a couple home made brackets easily made with a hand drill and some steel, or aluminum strap.
My 2000 has had a 93 head on it for the last 100K kms ... or about 10yrs or so ish.

So are u saying if i use a 96-99 head i need to swap exhaust manifolds? There two piece arent they

Ive been looking around and 96 seems to be the most common ones im finding in good shape So thats probably whats gonna end up on it

The two piece manifold started with the 0331 head casting. The ports in the head were changed as well. Swapping the head requires the earlier manifold. The manifold was the same from 1991-1999.

I'd put TUPY head on as others mentioned. rent a valve spring compressor and give all valves and seats a look. check all the ports and make sure the surface is flat. may need to be decked.

also take care when removing it. take a torque wrench and undo the head bolts in 10-20 pound increments. go in reverse order as you would tighten it. popping head bolts completely out can warp it if not done with care
