Glad you are getting the hang of the forum. Not many on here on a Sunday evening. But to answer your question, I rebuilt one of these last spring and if I remember correctly, there are a couple of nylon shoes that go on the end of the shift fork. These are probably worn out. Simple explanation, but a pain in the ass to fix though

So does the tranny have to drop or can it be done by removing the shifter?

You will have to remove the tranny and take the tail housing off and the case. Thought I had a pic or two somewhere, but I cannot find them. If you are going to get serious about this, you will need some good snap ring pliers. I can send you instructions out of a factory service manual if you are going to do it. You will need them. These Japanese trannys are good, but they don't come apart like American trannys

There is one more thing you can try now that I think about it a little. There is a plastic sleeve on the end of the shift fork. Sometimes those get worn and cause shifting problems. You can get at that by removing the four bolts on the top of the shift tower and removing the shifter

You can check the shifter. You would have to pull it anyway to remove the tranny

When I seen "TRANNY ISSUES" I was thinking something along the lines of this.
I guess this ain't that kind of forum.

I just changed that rubber o ring that goes in the shifter and its still jumping out of fifth...guess the next step is to drop the tranny and replace them rubbers on the shift fork
