View Full Version : My Welding Projects

I bought a welder a few months ago. Just thought I'd share some of the small projects I've been working on. Sorry, at least these first ones aren't Jeep-related yet. I hope to soon graduate to being able to make something for our Jeeps, but until then these are my practice projects.

This is the first real thing that I made:

http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af15/abebehrmann/IMG_4668_zpsorekf8ib.jpg (http://s989.photobucket.com/user/abebehrmann/media/IMG_4668_zpsorekf8ib.jpg.html)

Made from scrap 1/8'' plate, not much to look at. We use it to hold our TV remotes.

After I finished that, I was trying to decide what to make next. That's when my girlfriend told me she didn't think I could make a metal pyramid... I figured, "I'LL SHOW HER!"

Made a cardboard cutout

http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af15/abebehrmann/IMG_4675_zpszn82qj8y.jpg (http://s989.photobucket.com/user/abebehrmann/media/IMG_4675_zpszn82qj8y.jpg.html)

Then cut it out of more scrap 1/8'' plate

http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af15/abebehrmann/IMG_4674_zpsdvdyzv48.jpg (http://s989.photobucket.com/user/abebehrmann/media/IMG_4674_zpsdvdyzv48.jpg.html)

Tacked it all together

http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af15/abebehrmann/IMG_4679_zpsogiu4ogo.jpg (http://s989.photobucket.com/user/abebehrmann/media/IMG_4679_zpsogiu4ogo.jpg.html)

Welded it up

http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af15/abebehrmann/IMG_4682_zpsjxaxgfah.jpg (http://s989.photobucket.com/user/abebehrmann/media/IMG_4682_zpsjxaxgfah.jpg.html)

Then gave it a good grinding

http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af15/abebehrmann/IMG_4684_zpsnrwmbnh5.jpg (http://s989.photobucket.com/user/abebehrmann/media/IMG_4684_zpsnrwmbnh5.jpg.html)

I SURE PROVED HER WRONG! :smiley-taunt002:

Next I got a bit more ambitious and decided to try to make a hexagonal box with a hinged lid.

http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af15/abebehrmann/IMG_4703_zpsky8yayfw.jpg (http://s989.photobucket.com/user/abebehrmann/media/IMG_4703_zpsky8yayfw.jpg.html)

http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af15/abebehrmann/IMG_4705_zpsdlpniha2.jpg (http://s989.photobucket.com/user/abebehrmann/media/IMG_4705_zpsdlpniha2.jpg.html)

http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af15/abebehrmann/IMG_4707_zpseitrnq6c.jpg (http://s989.photobucket.com/user/abebehrmann/media/IMG_4707_zpseitrnq6c.jpg.html)

http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af15/abebehrmann/IMG_4710_zpsf5b8jtuz.jpg (http://s989.photobucket.com/user/abebehrmann/media/IMG_4710_zpsf5b8jtuz.jpg.html)

The hardest part was trying to figure out how to make the hinge work properly.

http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af15/abebehrmann/IMG_4712_zps0qbpubss.jpg (http://s989.photobucket.com/user/abebehrmann/media/IMG_4712_zps0qbpubss.jpg.html)

Blended it in:

all my projects seem to be practice ones. With about 15 minutes of "formal " instruction, I have been practicing at it for over 35 years. With the exception of small fixes for a couple people, I have welded to suit myself. I figure its something when the pieces stick together after I'm done welding.

Your off to a very good start! The bead looks nice and even on the remote box, and the rest look good too! The fitting of your projects is also well done. Have you tried any vertical or overhead welds yet? They come in handy when you can't lay your work flat. Anyway it all looks good, so keep it up!

Funny you should mention that. I was actually contemplating buying some of those kits from the Lincoln foundation but I couldn't bring myself to spend so much on shipping! So I just stopped by the scrap metal yard I pass on my way to work and picked up a few hundred pounds of scrap instead.

Thanks! I've been practicing my vertical welding and have tried a little overhead, but I really do need to practice this more. Thanks for the reminder.

When you are able to, check out Everlast welders. For all the features they offer, the price is hard to beat.

Until then, you're always welcome in my shop in Dallas.

This is my most recent project, finished it last night. It is a Christmas present for my boss. Last year we published a paper that, among other things, showed that when you knock out LRP6 from mouse smooth muscle cells you see a huge upregulation in Asymmetric Dimethylarginine (ADMA). A lot of our current research is building on this so I figured I would build him a sculpture of ADMA.

Which reminds everyone, Jeep people are hugely multi-talented, and skilled in many disciplines.... :xjtalk: Must be the "tinkering" we have to do.

So if there every actually is a Day-Z, find Jeep people and stick with them...and don't be surprised if they know a little about everything....or are good friends with someone who does. :D

Great projects, Abe. I also went the "other" brand route with my plasma cutter, a Longevity unit. Looked long at the Everlast line.

Have been happy with the unit and customer service...yeah, if I was rolling in $$ I would have bought big three, but.....

I have been looking at picking up a welder to learn myself on how to weld with some scrap metal... Was wondering what models you guys picked up from the respective companies that you went with, where you ordered yours from and if you are running gas on yours or not?? I can't afford one of the big name units, and am afraid the one from HF might ruin my learning process.. or learn me wrong... lol

Yeah, I'm with you. If I could afford it, I would've picked up a Miller or a Lincoln, but for all the features I got with my $700 welder, I would have had to spend at least double that to get one of the better brands. I figure if it lasts the length of it's warranty (5 years) it will be well worth the investment. By then I should be just about finished paying off my student loans and will have the ability to splurge on a nicer unit.

I picked up the Everlast Power iMIG 200 off of Amazon a couple months ago. Most listings show $799, but if you look around a bit you should be able to find it for $699. It's a MIG machine but it can also do Stick welding, which was an extra bonus for me because I wanted to learn both. I am using the normal MIG gas with it (75/25 CO2/Argon), but for the first 1.5 months I had it I couldn't afford a bottle yet so I just used it for stick welding.

I'm pretty happy with it so far. After I get a little more practice with it, I plan on writing up a little review for XJTalk

Started a new project yesterday, will be a gift for my mom so I'm trying my best to make it perfect. Too proud of my welds to wait until the project is finished before posting it up. The pics make it look like there is a bit of undercut but I promise that is an optical illusion. A little sad I'll be grinding these off.

Thanks for the compliments guys.

Here is the sequence of building that box for my mom:

Started with this rusty piece of 1/8'' plate
http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af15/abebehrmann/IMG_4886_zpsii8bmbeg.jpg (http://s989.photobucket.com/user/abebehrmann/media/IMG_4886_zpsii8bmbeg.jpg.html)

Next I made the a template for the size box I wanted to make. I wanted the inside of this box to by shiny too so I ground off all the rust and mill scale before I started assembling it
http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af15/abebehrmann/IMG_4892_zpsesztenvl.jpg (http://s989.photobucket.com/user/abebehrmann/media/IMG_4892_zpsesztenvl.jpg.html)

Then I tacked it all up
http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af15/abebehrmann/IMG_4896_zpshkckuyhx.jpg (http://s989.photobucket.com/user/abebehrmann/media/IMG_4896_zpshkckuyhx.jpg.html)
http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af15/abebehrmann/IMG_4895_zps6nujtsp9.jpg (http://s989.photobucket.com/user/abebehrmann/media/IMG_4895_zps6nujtsp9.jpg.html)

Then laid down the beads I was bragging about earlier. Turns out welding is a whole lot easier to do (still not exactly easy for me though) when you adjust your welding helmet to the correct shade!
http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af15/abebehrmann/IMG_4897_zps1fdisx8j.jpg (http://s989.photobucket.com/user/abebehrmann/media/IMG_4897_zps1fdisx8j.jpg.html)
http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af15/abebehrmann/IMG_4903_zpskaqo7j1b.jpg (http://s989.photobucket.com/user/abebehrmann/media/IMG_4903_zpskaqo7j1b.jpg.html)
http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af15/abebehrmann/IMG_4905_zpsc30ys0dh.jpg (http://s989.photobucket.com/user/abebehrmann/media/IMG_4905_zpsc30ys0dh.jpg.html)

Next I added the hinges I picked up from Home Depot. I believe they are for cabinets but I ground off the finish and plug welded through the screw holes and ground off the excess. Had to cut little notches in the box so that the lid would lay flat. Then I cringed a little and ground off all traces of those beautiful welds I laid down.
http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af15/abebehrmann/IMG_4958_zpsaztwtgg5.jpg (http://s989.photobucket.com/user/abebehrmann/media/IMG_4958_zpsaztwtgg5.jpg.html)
http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af15/abebehrmann/IMG_4960_zpslxnexujd.jpg (http://s989.photobucket.com/user/abebehrmann/media/IMG_4960_zpslxnexujd.jpg.html)
http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af15/abebehrmann/IMG_4957_zps6s5kzghy.jpg (http://s989.photobucket.com/user/abebehrmann/media/IMG_4957_zps6s5kzghy.jpg.html)

Then I cleaned it up a bit more with a finer grit flap wheel, sprayed it with some clear coat, and shipped it off to my mama. She seems very happy with it.

Other than this I've mostly been working on my vertical uphill and downhill MIG techniques, getting better but still not where I would like it to be. I've also been working on a few other, somewhat smaller, projects needed for my shop that I'll post up when I get some pics of them.

Sorry I haven't updated for a while. I haven't quit welding, I'm just not very good at posting up what I'm working on.

A few months back I was really getting a hankering for some tasty smoked meats, so I went looking for a BBQ. After looking at a few in stores that were $200+ for really crappy quality units, I decided to build my own. I stumbled across some plans for a cheap barrel smoker and found some food grade barrels on Craigslist for $5/each so I bought two. Bonus, they're Kosher! (For those times you need some kosher pulled pork)
http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af15/abebehrmann/509D45EA-1037-431D-A5E6-89AA0A4D67F3_zpsb6mc2urr.jpg (http://s989.photobucket.com/user/abebehrmann/media/509D45EA-1037-431D-A5E6-89AA0A4D67F3_zpsb6mc2urr.jpg.html)

I started off building a frame for the barrel to sit into, so when it inevitably burns out I could somewhat easily replace the barrel without having to scrap the whole thing.

http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af15/abebehrmann/CAAA2729-0836-4864-B1D4-5A7E433AD71F_zps5wbkwqme.jpg (http://s989.photobucket.com/user/abebehrmann/media/CAAA2729-0836-4864-B1D4-5A7E433AD71F_zps5wbkwqme.jpg.html)

I thought it sat nicely in there, so I started working on the door/hinges. I drew out where I would cut the door and then cut the side where the hinges would go so I could weld on the hinges before cutting the whole door out. I had read that this makes door fit up sooo much easier than the alternative.

http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af15/abebehrmann/E47C69B6-1161-4257-81F9-03954F18F688_zpseejvrslb.jpg (http://s989.photobucket.com/user/abebehrmann/media/E47C69B6-1161-4257-81F9-03954F18F688_zpseejvrslb.jpg.html)

After welding on the hinges, I cut out the other three sides.
http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af15/abebehrmann/EDBB558B-56F7-48B2-BB0E-204DEA75387E_zpsxzrmglvs.jpg (http://s989.photobucket.com/user/abebehrmann/media/EDBB558B-56F7-48B2-BB0E-204DEA75387E_zpsxzrmglvs.jpg.html)

It was at this point that I made a discovery, these food grade barrels I bought actually had a red plastic liner sprayed onto the inside.
http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af15/abebehrmann/8061514E-0576-40A4-A95F-FEE70B415533_zpsslan3nno.jpg (http://s989.photobucket.com/user/abebehrmann/media/8061514E-0576-40A4-A95F-FEE70B415533_zpsslan3nno.jpg.html)
After doing some internet based research, I found this was a difficult thing to remove. I could either burn it out and the scrape it out (which I didn't want to do) or use my 4.5'' grinder to grind it out (which I also really didn't want to do). So I went back to the drawing board.

I ended up finding this old 57 gallon propane tank on CL, that had been listed for $50 about a month before. I called about it and asked the guy if he still had it (he did) and if he would take $20 for it (he did).

After cleaning it up with a wire wheel, it started to not look so bad. Seeing as it was an old propane tank, I didn't feel comfortable cutting into it, even though I had been told that the valve had been open for years, so I filled it with some water and dawn dish soap to hopefully clean it out at the same time.

It was at this point that I was certain my neighbors started to question my sanity, but oh well. I marked out the doors, and cut the hinge side as I did with the barrel.

I framed out under the doors to seal it up better with some ~1/8''x 1'' flat stock I had laying around. All I did was drill holes around the doors and plug welded the 1'' around the perimeter (sorry close up pics of this right now) and then started building the legs from some scrap C-channel and black iron pipe to connect them for more stability.

The wheels/axle were from an old broken lawn seed spreader I found out at Salvation Army for $2. I next cut a hole in the side and used a scrap piece of tube (maybe 4''x6''?) for the chimney.

After that, I built a frame for the grill racks out of 1'' square tubing I found at the scrap yard and then fitted the expanded metal grates I would be using.

It was right this time that I had an extreme craving for some tasty smoked pork ribs so I threw some scrap wood handles on the doors and cut a hole around where my fire box will eventually go, but will serve as ventilation for coals until I get to that point. I know what I want for the firebox but I still haven't found the right one for the right price so this would have to do for now. And the ribs were delicious.

Finished up a wedding present (we(l)dding present?) for one of my friends from High School. Really like the cool oxidation coloring that happens when you shine the metal and then weld on the back side, so I tried to emphasize those with this project. Let me know what you guys think.

Been a while since I've shared any of my projects. I got this portable band saw from my beautiful and generous wife for Christmas.

http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af15/abebehrmann/IMG_6479_zps9dnv07eb.jpg (http://s989.photobucket.com/user/abebehrmann/media/IMG_6479_zps9dnv07eb.jpg.html)

So last weekend I used the portable band saw to build this stand to easily and quickly convert it to a vertical band saw for cutting out more intricate and precise designs. I repurposed the scrap square tubing from the failed 55Gal barrel grill/smoker stand I started building earlier this year before I decided to go with propane tank instead.
http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af15/abebehrmann/image2_zpsk2plhktf.jpg (http://s989.photobucket.com/user/abebehrmann/media/image2_zpsk2plhktf.jpg.html)
http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af15/abebehrmann/image1%202_zpsuuiawyzt.jpg (http://s989.photobucket.com/user/abebehrmann/media/image1%202_zpsuuiawyzt.jpg.html)

I made the cutting surface removable from the rest of the stand to make it easier to bolt it down instead of having to simultaneously hold the band saw up and line up the bolts and tighten them down. This way I can just set the cutting surface onto the band saw, bolt it down and then slip it onto the stand. Works great!

Now that is sweet Abe! I've seen the swag stands but why not make it yourself! Seems way more sturdy too. Ingenious!

That's awesome... see this is why I need to learn to weld... Cause I've been looking at the SWAG stuff... and some of it I'd probably still purchase from them... but some of it, I feel that someone who knew how to weld... could probably build it up themselves cheaper...

It mounts basically the same as the Swag Offroad Portaband stand. Basically unbolt the little guard that comes on it and bolt on the cutting surface table I made and then slide that onto the box-tube stand. Initially I wanted to buy some new bolts for it and use a thicker piece of steel plate and drill/countersink holes to attach it, but I didn't have a single piece of thicker metal this size and I didn't feel like driving up to the hardware store to buy the proper bolts. Instead I just welded smaller pieces to the underside where it contacts the saw so it sits square but also allows the bolt heads to sit below the top surface. I was also hoping to make a stand that would support the weight of the saw, so it's not all on those two bolts but after studying it for a while, I couldn't come up with a good way to do this while also making it easy to convert back to a portaband within a couple minutes. I also figured if it works for the commercially available stands, it should work fine for me.

Well Abe you inspired me, and I was able to butter up the wife enough to let me order one! So I have a dewalt dwm120 on order! I went with this saw because of the mounts, should be real simple to build a stand for it, and plans for a mount to make it a square cut off saw!!!

Been a while since I updated this. Here are a few of some somewhat recent little projects I've done.

Made Darth Vader's TIE Fighter while I was waiting for the new Star Wars movie to come out.

14371

Had a lot of fun making that so I decided to make an X-Wing Fighter too (to bring balance to the universe )

14372

My wife bought a new computer for her side job she does on nights and weekends at the house, but she didn't have anywhere to put it so I built her a desk out of 3/4'' 0.063 square tube with wood inserts. First time building anything like this, but I think it turned out pretty good.
