Just bought this XJ, body is pretty clean outside of the door, suspemsion bits and tank straps, has been sitting for more than 5 years, engine cranks, no start, drivetrain is a ? I also have a 96 XJ with a great driveline but junk body, i am debating, should i swap driveline, electrical and all, or should i just part it out as was my original plan.

id try to get it running an go from there. probably something small, so then you need to decide if you want to sell it or swap to good body. Hard to make that decision with a 600 lb paperweight sitting between the front fenders

I didnt mention rhe pioneer is a 130xxxmile 6cyl with an automatic, the 96 donor wouls be a 6cyl 5spd, to me a great improvement in fuel injection and transmission.

You got a pic of the rear axle? Being a 1989, it could have the Dana 44 which I've seen go for 2x+ the price you paid for the whole Jeep.

I would think about swapping everything over to the better body... Otherwise you'll still be looking for a body to swap all the bits from the 96 over to... and unless you are just a very lucky person to find a good body for a decent deal.. I'd say what you got now would be worth swapping over to, unless underneath is rusted out!!

I have been saving that driveline for a rainy day for my wranglers, but i just fear the complexity of that swap with such a gap in years between the two xjs

Well if you are just swapping everything over as far as drivetrain and wiring (especially the engine wiring)... then wouldn't think it'd be too much of a swap really... And anything would be better than the stupid Renix fiasco the 89 has going on!! That is probably the reason it got parked in the first place, was probably one of the many fusible links went out or something silly like that, that usually seems to plague the Renix rigs!!

I'd say try to get it running. A good score, and even better if you get it going easily. Still a good drivetrain in the '89, if its in good shape.

8.25 rears can be had reasonably. 8.8 as well. no need for a 44 IMO
