Hey everyone so I've recently installed a new cb in my xj. And have also tuned the antenna. However I am having an issue with the radio. I can hear people talking just fine, but as soon as I key the Mic to talk I come in as a tone. Not words not static but just a plain tone. Does anybody here have any ideas or suggestions of what could be the issue and how I can fix it? Thank you in advance

I have no idea... But hang tight. There are quite a few C.B/Ham radio guys here that know their stuff.

How many watts are you putting out? I've seen this type of problem with the finals are toast.

Check the CB / PA switch!

The mic I have now is the one that came with the new cb. The new cb only included the mic

what do you mean by the antenna was tuned, was the SWR checked after the installation?

Yeah checking the SWR after installation at both the low end (channel 1) of the spectrum as well as the upper (channel 40) and making adjustments to the antenna to get it to good SWR readings..

Do you have a friend that you can swap CBs with? If his radio does the same thing in your Jeep you know it's not your radio.. however if his works fine your radio is likely toast. If its new, you can try for a return but those radios are almost disposable.

Though make sure your SWRs are good before doing this, don't want to blow your buddies radio too. I suspect your radio is the culprit though.

so how do you "tune" an antenna? or radio? I've got one and can talk on it if I'm close to people, but hear some interference and I'm sure they do too. anyone got a sticky/link?

Depends on the antenna. What antenna do you have, how and where is it mounted? You'll need a SWR meter, or maybe your radio has one built in.

radio is a cheap one. doubt it has one built in.
mount is the magnetic base for now, will order a hood mount by the fender shortly. trying to get Jeep back together first, then on to other things. like CB

Had one that I believe was a Uniden that had very similar options.. but was a full size unit, that looked very similar to a Cobra unit from back in the day (pretty much similar to their still in production radios as well)

No built in SWR meter with the compact CBs. Will need an external SWR meter and short jumper coax.

Maybe this thread will help.... or make things worse. http://www.xjtalk.com/showthread.php?t=17571

The make mount probably has an adjustment collar near the base that you can loosen and move the vertical element of the antenna up or down and retighten. This is how you lengthen or shorten the antenna depending on the SWR reading.

I can't tell without a specific make/model, but the antenna probably has a set screw that you can use to remove the stinger. With a SWR meter you can adjust the length of the antenna for best SWR. If I remember correctly a 3.0 SWR and you lose 70% of the RF power going out your antenna.

I'm happy with 1.5:1 to 1.7:1 SWR Don't waste your time trying to achieve a 1.1:1

Right... you need a $100 meter to tune your $30 CB.. funny how that works huh?

Or you can get a $17 meter through Amazon (www.jeeptalkshow.com/amazon)
The Astatic PDC1, $16.95

Some truck stops have CB shops inside or nearby that should tune it for your for a small fee or possibly free.
