or maybe you like the chuuby hole.... :love0055:

:D But for the cubby hole in the back of the XJ here is a storage bag solution that I found. Would be better if it screwed into the back panel instead of velco but nothing a couple screws with large heads or with washers couldn't solve.
I have no affiliation or experience with the brand, just something I found and thought I would pass along.

That's what I was thinking about using the otherwise useless cubby hole for. just got to figure out what size extinguisher to pick up.. Been considering putting one there, or mounting it on the trim that is around the back side window (at the bottom of the window, right above the useless cubby hole).. So stuck between mounting the extinguisher in the cubby hole, and my Mag Lite on the trim above it, or vise versa!! But this little pouch/bag is pretty neat use of it... Do think it'd be better if it was more permanently installed using screws over the velcro, but guess it'd work good if you make it a First Aid Kit, since it'd be easy to grab and yank off the velcro and go where you need it, quickly...

Someone used to make a sub-woofer enclosure for that area, but many people complained that it vibrated, and not in a good way.

I could see why. I have a sub (not in the cubby) and the whole back panel on my xj vibrates like crazy. Also couldn't see that being a big enough enclosure to get decent sound out of a sub...

Agreed!! Looking at doing some dynamat while I got the headliner out, as well as the rear hatch cover off.. Will only be running my 1 sub like I had in my old XJ, but still figure might as well do what I can now to stop vibrations while I got stuff pulled apart.. I would think there would not be enough airspace for good sub performance to do an enclosure in the cubby hole, but IIRC the ones that I see built for that spot, are usually running cheap, low end subs, unless they built custom fiberglass enclosures, and those usually stick out a bit from the panel, to build up that air space... but would still rather not do that!!

I just got started on this box last night. Once im done, it will be a fully sealed box with .51 cubic feet of air space. The sub i have is a shallow mount P3S, and its only 3.6" deep, and requires .5-1.0 cubic feet, so there is room behind it for an actual box. I will still be dynamatting the inside just to try to minimize rattles.

I may switch to MDF once im done. This was more of a "I wonder if it will work" build out of boredom lol

Not a bad deal at all... most folks don't bother with the trying to remedy the rattles part... So doing it properly wouldn't be a bad thing... I don't knock the sub in that spot, just done properly, or with a decent sub (which you are running)... Unfortunately my Type R 12 won't work there @ all!! LOL So I'll just stick with my larger box I'll have again in this XJ...

Yeah most higher end subs will need much more volume than you can get out of that cubby. Also some advice when you are putting dynamat , cut a piece the size of your license plate and glue/attach it to the back of your license plate in the rear. Makes a world of difference when that thing isn't rattling around back there haha

I googled something like "XJ cargo mods". I found the fire extinguisher idea and one to mount a big Maglite too. Great fun!

There's a guy on ebay that builds a metal box that uses the cubby as part of it's interior storage space. I think I'm going to pick one of those up and use it to build my solarpanel/charger/battery/inverter setup in the back of the Jeep. can't find them right now he may have stopped building them but I think I could piece something together myself.
