Headed to Black hills in a few weeks. What are your guy's thoughts on using the wife's 00 WJ 4.0L to pull a car trailer with my XJ on it? My Jeep scales at about 4500 pounds. Add a trailer and gear 2 kids, tools, etc should be aound 6500-7000 lbs..

It is going to be slow going. Also you might want to add some air bags inside the rear coils. It will make the weight transfer not so bad

The more I think about it the more I think its a not so good idea.

I have done stuff like that, but it was a real long trip

Even though I don't like flat towing it would cut about 2k lbs of trailer.

I thought about that too but it's still pushing the limits of the WJ I think.

Jake, I would not do it. Positioning of your XJ on the trailer is going to be critical. And the tow will be very hard on your transmission. I think if you really want to take the XJ(I would too!), flat tow it or better yet drive it.

I had a 2000 WJ 4.0, and miss it. But it worked hard just to move the 33's on a 4" lift, with 3:73 gears. I couldn't imagine towing an XJ with it without stressing myself out.

Depends on how far you're going. More than 100 miles, I would look for another tow rig. Bring a friend with a full size truck

I'm not all that keen on flat towing it. I'd love to drive it but 450 miles of herding cats down the freeway with 2 kids and a fully loaded XJ doesn't sound like too much fun!

Got a trailer lined up I'll just take a used truck from work here and tow with that I'm thinking.

My childhood vacations nearly verbatim. Just in a zj. 1200 miles and we could barely move cause it was so full.
