I haven't officially taken possession of my 2001 2 wheel drive XJ. It is a gift from my brother-in-law. It is not running and it has an electrical issue I need to figure out. once he said he was ready to unload it I started lookin around for info about them, never had an off-road vehicle before and if i really want an off-road XJ I will need to convert it. I have been listening to the XJ talk show for the past 2 weeks trying to learn all about them. I am mechanically able and looking forward to the challenge. I have read that most will tell me to sell this and buy a 4x4 RTG... I want the knowledge that i will gain from this as I haven't tried a job this large before.
Tony and Josh paint a good picture with happy trees and XJ owners. I know I will find answers and direction here.

Yeah it's not that bad, at least that's what msmoorenburg tells us. I think he's done it a couple of times on XJs. Dana 30 high pinion, AW4 transmission and a NP231 or NP242 transfer case. Not sure if you'll need a different rear drive shaft.

Oh! And thanks for listening!

I applaud you for taking this on. The knowledge you'll gain from doing this yourself will be invaluable. And if you need any online assistance we're here. Like tony said you'll need a transmission from a 4x4 model, t-case with linkage, front axle with matching gearing as rear, and driveshafts. All in all I don't think its too bad, although I have never done it personally. In everything I take on I always make sure to search for many sources out there on whatever mod/repair I take on. The different opinions and ways of doing things can really help grasp what needs to be done. I'm sure there are a few write ups out there. I'll give it a look too.

Welcome to xjtalk. glad to have you hear and keep us posted.
