Over the weekend i wanted to swap in my new rotors in the front and shoes in the back. Fronts went in lickety split, the rear was a different story...

http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/06/04/be3cca5aa3a38c1455d1ff294fffefe6.jpg

Long story short everything came apart fine but after finally getting everything together right the lever that "clicks" on the self adjuster screw sits about 1/16th inch below where it needs to be, allowing the self adjuster to spin freely. Any advice? I have spent every evening this week after work assembling and dissasembling, but the problem persists. I have bought new springs and new self adjuster kits for both sides. Tonight i am putting in new wheel cylinders because with all the fuss i put a hole in one of the rubber ends. [emoji14] i figure i might as well anyway while I'm in there so i don't have to worry about it later.

As always thank you for any help, and all advice is welcome. :)

Either you have the wrong shoes or you have the spring and clip in the wrong hole. Show me a pic

I'm pretty sure all the springs are in the correct place, i hadn't even thought about having the wrong size shoes though...

What I need is a pic of what is happening on the bottom And 9" shoes probably won't cut it

XJs came with two options for the rear brakes. 9" (most common) and 10". Not sure if there were specific years they had the 10" brakes but I have only seen them on one '89 2wd. For what it's worth that looks like the 9" version.

Sent via messenger pigeon. I talk, he types.

This is the passenger side. You can see in the first pic the lever is off just a tad

Have a look at this ... in case its the same issue I had ??

Things to watch out for .....

The adjuster lever doesnt touch the sprocket properly ...

.... that's probably coz the self adjuster cable guide, isn't flush on the brakeshoe.

Make sure the retaining plate is up on the shaft properly. The self adjuster cable probably wont - depending on the shaft length.

You sir... I mean mate ;) ... Are a genius. That did the trick. What a bugger that was. Now to tear it all apart again to put in the new wheel cylinders... [emoji14]

Hahhh ... If a genius is someone sitting on a cold concrete floor at 1am in the morning, yelling and swearing at a Chryco brake assy - whilst skinning their knuckles on crap ....

.... yep ... thats me .. :D

Theres a few little tricks that the workshop manuals dont cover .. :(

Glad you got it sorted ..

Glad you solved the problem.. Drum brakes always give me a fit too.
From what I understand the 10 inch brakes came on the law enforcement models.

The '89 that em was a red sport model. It was a 4.0l 5speed, maybe that matters.

That's what the guy says the parts store was saying too. After this i would love even more to do the rear disk brake conversion. That would be really nice.

Well i ended up taking the jeep to a mechanic to put the wheel cylinders in. The brake lines were rusted on so i couldn't get them off, plus i figured it was a good idea to have a proffesional look at them after the work i did... Brakes are scary... Put new brake drums on too, so the whole drum brake assemblies are brand new. :)

Good call.
Nothing wrong with calling in a little back up from time to time.
Safety first. Or in my case safety third, after food and clean underwear

That's interesting, i wonder why some are the different size.

Five months later the jeep stops like a pro!
