Getting home from work to day I was looking the Houston Chronicle and on the front page was a picture of astronaut Ed White. The first American to walk in space 50 years ago today. To some it's just history. But to me it's a bit more personal. Ed White was my neighbor. After moving from Cali to Texas I lived in a community right across the street from NASA called Nassau Bay. It was home to the majority of the Apollo astronauts. There were 4 of them that lived on the street I did. White, Cernen,Scott and Cuningham. Ed White lived right next door to me. I grew up with there kids and I went to school with them. So I knew them personally as I would hang out at there house's. It was preatty cool (and frusterating at times) As Ed White did the first space walk the news media was so thick on our street we had to have police escort to get off the school bus to walk home. My dad was warned on more than once to quit squerting the water hose on news people in our front yard. Ed White was to fly the first Apollo mission. In 1967 durning a pre launch test Ed White,Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee were killed when the module caught on fire. I remember coming home from school and seeing all the news media in front of our house. I did not know what was going on as there was nothing special going on at that time space wise. I saw his daughter (the same age I was) crying in the front yard. I went to her and asked whats wrong then she told me. He was a real cool guy RIP Ed White.

Thanks for sharing that Greg. The space program has always been very important to me and I'm still rather upset that we have squandered years not continuing balls to the wall in our pursuit to go out there.

That's a really cool story. Its great to hear and now i will have to learn more about him. Great people of history are rare but to have a personal relationship with one, now that's cool.
