Because the Internet is full of good and bad information, and I need to change the shoes on my rear brakes and haven't done that job before, I wanted to check this trusted source for tutorial suggestions on the job.

I've done disc brakes many times, but never drums. My Dad grew up doing drums for his Dad, but neither are available for a consult.

Suggestions?

Same here. Drum brakes always stump me. When I did mine. I got lost, I snapped a pic and posted my question and someone answered right away and got me back on track.

Here's a good video from Matt over at BleepinJeep... he does great tutorial videos on all kinds of stuff... this should at least get you going.

First tip, get a spring tool. If you attempt it with pliers the springs will go flying into a parallel dimension and never be found again :D

Take picture before you start. This will give you a reference if you get confused.

Yep. I've learned, and relearned, that lesson numerous times with gun springs.

See if you can source a proper, factory service manual for your XJ ... a jeep one, Not the one size fits all - published by aftermarket groups.

... and X 2, on getting a spring tool as 4.3LXJ mentioned.

Something else I have found on these things,

Make sure the drum and wheel are on properly.
It seems that if the drum is only a poofteenth of an inch out of alignment, after the wheel nuts are tightened up,

... The back end will make noises like the drum is out of round ... or its about to spit an axle or something.

Don't know how much of a tutorial it is, but here's a video of what I had to go through while doing the drums on my XJ... there might be a useful tip in there somewhere.
