ok this might seem like a stupid question but could the cv axles with the boots from a 86 or older xj fit in my 96? and if so are they better, worse or is this a retard question? im wondering because one i want to replace my axles and thos are much cheaper, and i live down here on the beach and i do lots of mudding and this seem like thos with the addition of axle tube seals would prevent as much sand, water and mud damage as possible.

Not a dumb question, but I would suggest you not do that. The older axles are necked down to go into the CV and are not very strong. If you used them a little too hard, they would break there

hmm well is there a way to make a boot go on the factory cv's or some other solution?? cuz the only other option i see is the rcv cv's and i dont want to spend over a grand. i went mudding one time down here and my lightly rusted u joints and cv's went to hell and look 100 years old now

You can replace the boots on the CVs on any rig. The axle is held in the CV by an internal snap ring. You can cut the boot off and knock it off with a BFH. Slip on a new boot and use a special tool available at auto parts stores and tool stores to put the bands on the boot to secure them. There are two types, I bought both. This answer your question?

The advice given to me from others here in Florida (and here on XJTalk) is to buy the best greasable u-joints you can afford and grease them every time you go through water/mud.

This is about as good advice as you can get that fits within any budget...
However, what you are looking for is something like RCV axles.
They are a sealed CV joint style, but are INSANELY strong, and carry a no questions asked lifetime warranty.
You'll pay thru the nose, but there is literally no stronger axles available.
Check Them Out Here (http://www.rcvperformance.com/product-details-axles.aspx?sku=CVJ30-XJ)

The other thing you may want to consider are axle tube seals.
These are substantially cheaper, but are very effective at keeping water and debris out of the axle itself.
