I usta too, I built all the cabinets in my house along with a 800 sq foot room addition and 20x20 ft deck. That was about 20 years ago. My father inlaw was a master cabinet builder when ever a new saw or router came out he had to have it. Then he would give me his old stuff (which was still bad a$$ stuff) quit using them and over the years sold it all.

I come from a long line of woodworkers. My regret is that I didn't have the interest in my younger days to learn the craft.

My great grandfather was something special. I've seen several carvings that he's made (he actually used to work at a lumber place as a grader or something. Apparently, he was a whiz with wood). My Grandfather was skilled as well, and made most of the furniture that was in their house. Also made a pool table that had all the inner workings (ball returns and all) that was in his garage for decades. My father picked up the skill and used to make all sorts of things, including turning his own baseball bats from time to time.

Me? Well, I have done a few things recently that has really finally sparked my interest in woodworking. I have an armoire that had a leg break off (cheap mdf that a chunk came out of) and I cut a new base for and painted. I also had to install a new door from scratch, so cut off the bottom about an inch and chiseled out the hinge mounts and cut the holes for the knob and latch. (I know this last part isn't technically woodworking, but it was wood and I used tools lol!)

I would really like to get into making stuff from scratch. I know I'll inherit my dad's lathe, table saw and tools when, god forbid, he passes. I really wish I didn't move so far away so I could spend more time with him and learn :(

unfortunately, no. Most of them were given to other people after my grandmother passed. I have one of an elephant somewhere. Not sure where it is after we moved. I remember one carving that he did. It was a prism of some sort that had a free moving wood ball inside. Hard to explain, but he literally carved this perfectly round ball INSIDE the prism because you can't get it out, but it rolls from one end of the prism to the other.

Just FYI. In the basement shot, I included earlier, let's just say that everything was homemade, even the basement layout and construction. I did have a helper doing the construction up to the drywall, but unfortunately not with finishing the drywall. So other than the bottles, odds & ends on the shelves, and the bar stools. Even made the light above the table, as I couldn't find anything that would work the way I wanted. Table seats an easy 16. My wifes wine rack was a kit.

I was unable to unearth the elephant carving he did. It's rather dusty and the tip of the trunk has broken off years ago

Don't have any pics yet, but I broke down and started sanding the remnants of a pallet. Plan is to build a little table to go between some new chairs my wife bought to go by the bookshelf. This will be my first attempt at building something from scratch and coming up with the engineering myself. I'll keep yall updated

restored an old chaise lounge over the weekend. came out ok IMO.

there was a tag nailed to the bottom of it, but I couldn't make it out. had old mattress style coils in it. took all that out, built a bottom support, added foam and some fu fu stuff. really curious on its age, but don't have anything to go off of.

Busted out a quick bench stool so the wife could reach into the lowered crib. Still needs paint, but not bad for recycled horse stable wood and an hour and a half.

Thanks! i later found out that the right board being hickory can't be used as the grain is too porous and if it comes into contact with meat, it will be come very harmful lol. so it will just be a trivet! i still need to put oil on them.

As to the video/ wood glue, that video is awesome and i wish i had a wood lathe. As far as glue goes, it is just insane how strong glue is, 98% of the time the wood will break before the glue joint **if glued correctly**. Some other things, multiple pieces of wood glued together such as a stair tread is also called a laminate. There are several types of glue, varying drying times and also water resistant glue. Where i work we used primarily 10 minute, 1 hour and titebond 2 and tite bond 3(titebond is water resistant). Titebond is more of a caramel brownish colour opposed too the white colour of 10 min/1 hour. So for my cutting boards i used titebond for the gluing because of the high contact cutting boards will have with water.

All in all i have seen some amazing things happen with glue. Just like a curved rail or stringer glue up, Now thats something to see lol.

a friends dad builds custom staircases in Washington. worked with him for a couple weeks and everything we touched was glued. Kinda surprised me how much glue went into wook work. wouldn't mind seeing some of the work you have done.
