View Full Version : 94 4.0 stalling now

I replaced my dizzy to block gasket a few days ago, the jeep ran fine until I found out the internal gasket in the dizzy was my leak. I was typing on here in another thread went out and started it, by the time I made it back to the door to grab money and phone the thing died. Never happened to me before. Not sure whats up not, as I said it ran fine up until about an hour ago. Ive been searching and come up with everything from a pick up coil to ign coil to crank sensor....

It restarts right away, wont allow me to give it gas as it sputters, leave it alone it goes to 1500rpm down to 700 rpm down to zero in under 10 seconds. No other power is lost just ignition.... I dont have much time and need to get this fixed. New dizzy is ordered but need the jeep for work tomorrow.

I do have a meter to test electrical.

I think the first place to look is what you worked on last. Did you time the distributor correctly? Mudderoy has a thread here somewhere on that

It never moved, I was very careful when I removed and installed it a few days ago, but it ran fine tuesday and wednesday then today I get 30 seconds of run time, if gas is given it sputters and has the feeling like low power, I did notice a strong puff of fuel smell a few minutes ago when I was checking the CPS wiring.

I saw the write up its open in a tab but im just not able to pin this one down. I also cleaned and cannot see timing marks at all.

I removed the cap the e fan and the mech fan shroud. Set tdc #1 and without moving dizzy it shows im lined up right. Black mark on dizzy if from 2 days ago to mark rotor position which was #1 on cap as well.

Nothing man thats the kicker. My cps is newer the cam sensor had oil on it i cleaned it up. Iac was recently cleaned when i did a tune up in november. Fuel fikter all that good fun stuff but im hearing downstream o2 and or cps....

I would check the TPS. I would rule out electrical and fuel injector stuff.

WOT tps is at 200 and goes up and down from 0 to 200 with plate position.

Not sure where to go now. Haynes shows an auto shut off relay in the wiring diagram, i had a spare good one and replaced it with same results. I have plenty or fuel pressure no gauge but shot it across the garage with schrader valve plunge. I got a feeling its going into the shop might be more than my tool box can handle

Just for giggles, check your cat. Might be falling apart and plugging up the exhaust

Ill give it a good smacking after work tomorrow i pushed it in the garage til tomorrow. Garage= carrage house no electricity

I did take the IAC out today and its all the way out. Symptoms of a stuck open IAC jive with mine.

Today it started like crap. Garage smells very rich cat isnt making any noise when spanked

Got code 13. Replaced map with a mew unit. No fix. Comp never relearned idle. Its in the shop. Last i heard was it was showing a few sensors bad. Replaced a part inside the dizzy. Still diagnosing.

Its a 5v issue 4.3lxj. New map/cs/cps installed. .11v is all i got on the 5v circuitry

So far looks like a broken wire or backfeed ground to ecm. ECM is giving the readings it should the mech said. Possible 5v circuit isse in ecm but unlikely he claimed.

New dizzy new cps new cs new map installed. Broken wire in cps to cs harness. 1k in work

Yeah but got a steel shaft brand new dizzy out of it. The duralast gold ones are worse then 90s holley carb baseplates. Just crap pot metal. The mech is a neighbor and he hasnt seen errr looked at the xj before friday when it ran as normal this morning he said he couldnt believe how quiet the motor is. Even his jeep guru is now saying its running bad due to the silence. I got 8/9 months of 55 hour weeks starting yesterday to bank some away and overhaul the susension and steering and do new floor pans in it. My great dane pointed out my cargo pan was rotten...

But yeah 1 wire. Replaced the sensors as process of elimination but atleast their new. 38 hours of shop time for just under 1k aint bad. Now i need to hook him up with some low volt landscape lighting for hooking me up.

I appreciate the time you spent man. It was a weird one. That single wire caused all sorts of 5v issues.
