The heat/AC controls do not work as they should. Off to On okay. All other settings blow to the defroster setting. Help?

If it defaults to defroster there is a vacuum leak somewhere. Find the ball behind the passenger side of the front bumper and start tracing the vacuum lines to check for breaks, cracks, or disconnected hoses.

I'm not so good at the mechanical stuff... Having the engine running seemed to be the secret... :smiley-scared003: Be kind to me... I've still got a lot to learn! :o

OK, here is food for thought for you then. There should be some vacuum in the system, at least on a short term basis. There should be a check valve before the vacuum reservoir and another one in the line that goes to the axle lock to prevent it from coming out of 4WD in low vacuum situations

Chris a quick place to look is right under tha battery on the side towards firewall. Have had several friends with this problem and they all had a crcked hose right at the connetor in this location. Not saying thats it but pretty common problem.

When I started this thread I did not have the engine running... As soon as I started the engine... All the settings now work okay! What am I missing?

All those settings are run by vacuum diaphragms. It defaults to defrost just in case you loose vacuum

There isn't any vacuum if the engine isn't running. That's why you had trouble.

For the mechanically-challenged like myself... As soon as I read vacuum... I then figured I needed a source like the engine! ZoomZoom
