Last few times ive taken the gas cap off the xj its made a hissing noise for a long time. Couldnt tell if it was pressure or vacuum. Definitely didnt do it before. Anybody else have this problem? Wondering if its a plugged vent line or a bad gas cap. Is the gas cap on a xj a vented style? I could understand a plugged vent line, my jeep has seen a bit of mud in its days.

I think you're on the right track. Since it sucks to pull the tank i'd swap out the cap first and see if that does it. If not, the only thing left I believe is the vents. Now, whether its the lane or the vent itself would need to see first hand.

Me to, and they are super cheap. Can buy a jeep here for less than a gas tank costs there :P

Jim, if it is getting pressurized your line to the carbon canister is probably plugged, or something in that system. I can't remember if there is a purge valve on yours. I have one and if it doesn't work, then the tank will pressurize

Well I got underneath the jeep and looked around. Noticed through the holes in the plastic tank cover that the bottom of the tank is wet with gas. Don't know if the bottom is rusted through and leaking or if it's leaking from the top. Guess I'll be dropping the tank....

Hope the tank is near empty.

Took the xj wheeling on the trails around the house today. Went to take the gas cap off afterwards and there was so much pressure it blew fuel out of the filler neck. Also while I was checking things out underneath, I noticed if I pull the rubber line off the metal line running to the charcoal canister up front that it vents there. So the valves in the tank must be fine. It's either the canister or the line running to it

I've wheeled with you before....the charcoal canister is probably full of mud!:D

Fixed it. The metal line running to the charcoal canister was clogged. Cut off the last few feet that was clogged and ran new rubber hose.
