View Full Version : I need a new exhaust manifold

I Have a pea sized hole in the exhaust manifold, couple of cracks, pretty much i need a new one. So here is the question, does a "performance"manifold really do anything? Or should i just get the best deal? Also i have a hole in the tailpipe (after the muffler) and the muffler is nearly rotted out, it leaks around the inlet and outlet pipes, so should i just do a whole new exhaust system??

Performace ones scavange exhausy gases from your engine quicker i think but would still be restricted by your cat. Sometimes you can find deals on complete exhaust on ebay or quadratech. I just replaced the muffler on mine for 40 something at AZ but with having to replace pipe and header maybe package is the way to go

I know 2 guys that have put headers on their Jeep4.0 and both said they wasted their money. Supposedly the factory exhaust manifold flows really well. I read somewhere onetime that if you rework the crossover pipe you will vastly improve the flow and looking at it I could see where this might be the case. Seems most good headers run about 350 to 400, I could better use that money elsewhere...locker, gears, more lift.

Get you a cheap header with those accordion things on them so it can move and flex.

I think I'm going to get this Dorman brand header, has good reviews and the price isn't bad.

There will also be a new hi flow cat and muffler in the near future, but i haven't decided which i want yet. I'm really picky on how i want it to sound, i love idle sound and want it deep sounding, but HATE raspy over loud exhaust. I also want to steer clear of highway drone. Any suggestions??

Well, I can only go of my experience so here it is. I run a magnaflow 2.5" on mine and I, like you, don't want that drone on the highway. This muffler doesn't have that drone, and isn't much louder than stock. Although the sound isn't exactly the tone I would like. It sounds a bit like a diesel at idle. I do plan on a hi flow cat so I'm hoping it'll change it some. But in the higher rpms I love it. Now, my brother has a hi flow cat, flowmaster 44, and 2.5" tailpipe and admittedly it sounds great at idle. Very throaty. Although the drone is dreadful. I get the pleasure of squeezing into the back seat usually and at 55mph its difficult to hear the front seat passenger. I've read the 40 series is quieter so I may be tempted to try that one, although not without a ton of research first.

Thanks for the input. It seems to be hard to find one with the idle tone i want but without the drone. Maybe I'm asking too much, but I'm going to keep looking. I wonder what how your brothers would sound with a 2.25 tail pipe, i heard going down a size helps. I've also heard going to a smaller size tailpipe also helps torque by keeping the exhausr gasses at higher velocity as they cool.

It may, although from the charts I've seen 2.5" is spot on for a engine around the size of the 4.0. All the torque curve calculations are something far outside my mental capability so I just go by reading experiences and articles. I almost forgot, here's a video of his exhaust.

That does sound great at idle. Not sure i could live with the drone though. Thanks for the vid. :)

Ya, there's no way I could do it. I do envy his idle though. :D

Go with a Banks Torque Tube header, good low end grunt.I've had mine several years and no issues.Mine is the revolver style.http://i573.photobucket.com/albums/ss179/jeepster19/3b1f274575a2ab78a4496b82762745e2.jpghttp://i573.photobucket.com/albums/ss179/jeepster19/26dd33d872d073a9410f234519a1f289.jpghttp://i573.photobucket.com/albums/ss179/jeepster19/78ddf6b6a83d59213b6004eea6034854.jpg

Yeah those banks tubes are really nice, but pricey. The ones i saw were like 300 bucks more expensive then the one i got. I would love to have one though, maybe after this one goes bad.

Anyone have a banks for 5+ years that didn't crack?

I'd love to have the Banks to install on my 97, when I do the 99+ IM swap.... But yeah that price is a bit much... so think I'll be looking at picking up one of the Dorman units, and do the same 2.5" exhaust w/ FM 40 series like I had on my 98... it has a nice tone @ idle, and never had a complaint about the drone even on the highway... and that was even from passengers riding in the back seat... Got even more sounds, but still no added drone when I replace the worn out cat with a new bolt in unit from AZ... I think with a high flow you'd have far more drone...

Did you have 2.5 just from the cat back?

I just did the Dynomax cat back system,.. bit of a drone sound but the MPG gain is AOK! I run a pacesetter full length on the ol'race Jeep

Really? What kind of mpg gain did you get??

Had the dynomax super turbo (iirc on the name) on my brothers before the flowmaster and it sounded like a ricer. Hated that thing!

Jeepforum I think, has youtube clips of different header, cat and muffler setups. Check it out its well done. I'd link it, but on my phone

Took out the old and put in the new exhaust manifold today. Took forever. Actually had the most trouble with the fuel rail, ended up doing that like 3 times... But it's on and not leaking so I'm happy.

Here is the old, you can see where the weld blew out.

Thanks Denver. I've seen that before, I've listed to them all a couple times haha. It is pretty nice how they have it set up. I still haven't decided which exhaust set up i want to go with, so many choices. I found a good one the other day, but now i can't remember what it was or where i found it... :P

Just kidding, I found it! Spintech sportsman street muffler, magnaflow high flow cat.

How is the sound? Does it drone?

4.3LXJ
02-17-2015, 06:17 PM
Yes, it drones. When you buy a spintech you buy them by decibel level. The sprotsman is a 65 decibel muffler. It will never get any louder than the rated level

Hmm. Not what i was hoping to hear. I will have to keep looking into it. Thanks for your input, i really appreciate it.

Part of the trick to eliminate drone is a long enough tail pipe outside the body line

My first one cracked and I think I had it for 3+ years.I'm on my second one and it has been redesigned and it's close to 3 years now so I'll let you know how long it lasts Mudderoy.:D:xj-black:
