TCase

so my tcase blew up. there's a hole in it the size of a tennis ball. i already had one laying around from a 98 zj that i was rebuilding. i swapped it in got everything put back together. now when i move the shiftier on the tcase it wont shift. the linkage moves and the case shifted on the bench before i swapped it in. also since the swap i cant put it in drive or any gear. the transmission snifter moves but i cant move the jeep. that must be because of the tcase issue? the tcase shiftier does not clunk into gear.

after reading it looks like the input from my jeep is a 21 spline and the input on the zj is 23 spline. is this correct?

That would be correct. You can change the inputs out, but you need to tear the case all the way down to get it out.

great i spent all day yesterday swapping it in in 26 degrees and snowing just to pull it back out and swap the inputs. is there any trick to make pulling it out any easier?

I always drop the cross member down. Makes it easier to get to the top bolts. But in the cold, might be six of one half dozen of the other

i have been dropping the cross member there is a bolt right under the transmission rubber mount. but other then that no tricks?

yep. there's like six inches of snow so thats not too bad but it was like 26 out yesterday and i literally spent 12 hours on putting the new one in and now gotta take it back out.

rodney is super pricey. i help a buddy change his tcase this weekend and he needed a front drive shaft. rodney wanted 100$ for a tj front drive shaft.

so the input and planets are changed and the case is back in the jeep. i put everything up to ride height on stands. went to start it and let it warm up and try the case shifter annnnnnd woosh massive fuel leak on injector two. i knew i needed to replace them but was waiting. looks like now i will be swapping to mustang injectors before i can let it all warm up and try shifting the case

yep it is. y do injectors have to be so expensive. i remember why ive been waiting to do the swap. however the case seems to be in 2wd but the shift handle is up in the 4 part time position. lights are off as if 2wd. just adj the linkage?

Yes, there is an adjustment on the rod going forward to the pivot from the handle

ok cool i thought so just not sure. before i just it off i tried the shiftier. when i moved it to part time the tcase made a low pitched whine sound. i know the chain is ok inside. what would that be?

Not sure. Get it adjusted correctly then we can talk about noises

ok so today i confirmed that the case does go into gear just need to adj the linkage cause i cant move the handle down enough to engage 2wd. when i put the trans in gear the case does not spin. everything is disconnected and on stands. so i can test things. it makes the same noise as when i had the wrong input gear in it. so i have no idea at this point.

well basically i put it back together wrong. tooke it to a transmission shop for them to look at it. wrong front output bearing and was missing thrus washers and a few snap rings. shifts fine now and all. only thing is the tail output shaft is longer now and makes the driveshaft have no up travel?

the other thing is im haveing alot of oil blow by. if i set anything behind the tailpipe it turns black and oily. ill see after an oil change how it is. and im haveing a really low idle like barely above 0 but i did swap injectors and spark plugs so maybe after the oil change and the ecu relearns it will be better. i will post results after. once the engine warms up the idle stabilizes but stays low.

check oil level? too much? pcv valve bad?
valve seal do a leak down test.
put your other injectors back in and see if it changes back.

seems better after oil change but now have vibs (see new thread) and lots of oil blow by. out the tailpipe i can put my hand and it will get covered in oil
